Print Exchange Round 6
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:18:33 PM »
After a week of heaviness, I thought I'd resurrect the filmwasters print circle as a kind of friendly virtual group hug.  for those to new to remember the exchange, or those with brains as sieve-like as mine, here is a reminder of the rules:

Each person will be given the details of another filmwaster to whom they should send one print. This is not an exchange, you will only ever send one print and will recieve one print but from different people.  So John sends to Christine, who sends to Farquois, who sends to Jiminy, who sends to Millicent who sends to John - and thus is the circle completed.

Rules are few:-

1. Prints should be made from film negatives/ positives - no digital capture.
2. Prints should be made on a paper size of 10x 8 or A4 as a minimum although images can be any size upon this
3. Prints can be made in any way including alt processes, silver gelatine, inkjet etc.
4. Any comments/ details/ criticism requests are purely optional, although this can be helpful.
5. There is nothing to stop you making private arrangements to exchange prints within the circle, but that is not the purpose if this excercise
6. Those who do not send on a print after signing up will not be allowed to participate in future rounds until they have fulfilled their commitment (unless mitigating circumstances apply)
7. New members with no contribution in the forum are asked to get involved before signing up to the Print Circle.  We ask at least an introduction post or a few thread posts.
8.  All participants will receive details of the person from whom they will receive a print. It is the responsibility of each participant to chase up outstanding prints.

if you have not participated in the previous rounds, please send me the address you want your print sent to by PM when you sign up - those who have already had a go, I should still have your details.

Please try to may attention to rule number 7, we've had lots of people in the past joining up just to join the print exchange, then never sending a print, which just isn't cricket now is it?

Closing date for sign up = Friday 18th September midnight BST. Post your intention to participate on this thread.

Cheers

Leon

I'd love to take part in this, but am not entirely clear: I have no possibility of wet-printing. If I scan my neg and have the scan printed, is that alright? I don't actually have another option, and - although there is a digital inbetweenstage - my offering would still be based on film, glorious film.

The post mentions inkjet as an acceptable printing method. That must mean scanning, if it's a film capture.

Lynn - inkjet is fine :)

Meeeeeeeeeeee!!!

I thought you volunteered to run it this time, Ailsa? I was very much looking forward to participating in a well-run and efficient postcard exchange....but now it seems Leon's running it instead. You do know he's a student don't you? :D :D :D :D

Seriously though, Leon, thanks for taking the initiative on this and please count me in. At some point I'll even get round to putting the first 3 exchanges up as galleries as promised many moons ago. Only one more week of mixed-brain, busy madness to contend with and then I'll have more time for FW and photography again.

Mea culpa. My bad. Was so excited that I didn't actually read the post or its title properly.

In that case count me out. Postcard exchanges are more my thing. Good luck with it though & thanks for kicking it off.

Maybe it's time we had a postcard exchange then as well? :)

If no one minds I could start one -- I've organised print exchanges before on that other forum. Or are two exchanges at once too much?

Cheers

Mike

can we get this one underway first, then, of course Mike, you;d be welcome to sort it out, please try to stick to the same guidelines as before (do a forum search and cut/paste the original instructions).

Maybe wait until I get the addresses out for this one, then start it off.

thanks for volunteering :)

I will definitely participate in the print exchange.  I am considering the possibility of learning to use an inkjet printer.  I'll need to get a printer. Any wisdom on which?  90% of my work is in black and white.

Loads of unknown variables here and probably best suited to another thread.

But I've just been through the same process myself 5 months ago.

These are all pigment inks and all have grey inks for neutral B&Ws.

If you only want to print up to A3/A3+ then either Epson R2880, Canon Pixma Pro 9500 or HP B9180.

However if you may want to go up to A2 -- then Epson 3800

With the Epson R2880 you have to swap the black cartridges depending on if you are printing on gloss or matt media -- major hassle and expense!

Don't know much about the HP except a friend had one, well 4 actually. They all went back due to leaking inks etc.

The A3+ printers all have small ink cartridges -- expensive if you print lots. In that case go for the 3800 -- big cartridges, much cheaper in the long run even if you only print A4 and A3 size prints.

I don't print that much so I went for the Canon Pixma Pro 9500 (the older mark 1). Excellent printer, superb B&W, no colour casts at all. Used it to print up an exhibition (B&W on Harman fibre gloss paper) and at the opening night I had 3 professional photographers ask me if they were silver prints. They were all very surprised when they found out they were inkjet.

Cheers

Thanks, mikeg, for pointing me in the right direction.  You're quite right that there are lots of variables but at least I now have some place to start.  One thing I have noticed already is that neither Epson nor Canon supports mac os 10.6 yet.  Maybe I'll stick to my nice wet darkroom for the print exchange and jump into inkjet printing later.  I'll use the time to learn more about the options.

Can everyone signed up for the exchange send me their addresses please - the database file (on my windows based PC) in not working for some reason, and I cant get the addresses from the previous exchanges up.

So, if you're signed up for round 6 and have sent me your address for this round already, dont worry, all is fine. If you haven't sent me an address on the basis that I already have it ... can you please send it to me again via personal message please?

sorry
