Topic: what to charge????

I've been asked to tutor a friends son in the "art" of pinhole photography for a day, maybe two.   

I'm wondering what to charge as I've never charged for this type of thing before, only freelance/commissioned final works.


The student is familiar with darkroom techniques, exposing, developing, etc. so it's not like we're starting from zero knowledge.

I'll provide the materials to make a pinhole camera  since I have loads of leftovers lying around and wouldn't need to charge much for that part of it.
I just need help figuring out the tutoring part.

Any ideas or thoughts on this?

On the rare occasions I've been asked to do one-off things like this, I've charged an amount inversly proportional to how keen I was to do it - if I was keen, charge little, if I wasn't, charge a lot.

If these are 'real' friends and the kid's OK and you would like to do it and you have the time, charge a minimum amount, maybe just a few bucks an hour plus costs. If they are just aquaintances, the kid's a pain in the a** and you really don't have the time, I suspect 100 bucks an hour would put them off while not being unreasonable if compared with other professional services.

The other way to do it is think of something you want, really want, and would be prepared to spend a day or two of your time in exchange for getting it. How much is it? That's what you charge.

I remember back in College (about 15 years ago) I took some photography classes as an extra curricular activity. We were charged 50 or 75$ (can't exactly remember) for 1 semester. Classes were of around 5 or 6 students. Materials were included.

But that was probably a subsidized fee just to get the students doing something constructive...

The friend is a good one, and the kid is bright and polite, so it should be a fun thing,
and not a pain- hurry up and get it over with type of adventure for the both of us.
