HolgaMod: Which One Should I buy?
« on: March 28, 2008, 01:21:05 PM »
I'm trying to decide which HolgaMod to buy, and I'm hoping someone here can help me decide which one. Here are the 3 options, and the features (modifications) they have:

Deluxe Modified Holga
1.    2 Apertures
2.   Closer focusing
3.   Factory 6x6 mask
4.   Factory 6x4.5 maks
6    Holgamods Tripod mount
7    Holgamods Bulb mod
8.   Holgamods Cable Release
9.   Velcro

Deluxe PinHolga
Includes:
1.   Brass pinhole lens
2.   6x6 and 6x4.5 masks
3.   Holgamods Tripod mount
4.   Holgamods Bulb mod
5.   Cable release

HOLGA/PINHOLGA HYBRID
Includes:
1.   .012 PinHole
2.   1 Aperture
3.   Closer focusing
4.   6x6 and 6x4.5 factory masks
5.   Factory Bulb mod
6.   Factory Tripod mount
7.   10" cloth covered cable release

This is like buying a car. I like the idea of hte pinhole hybrid because, if I'm thinking right, it would mean I can shoot pinhole but have a viewfinder, to set things up, as well. Does anyone use these and know if it is better to just get two separate Holgas - one regular, and one pinhole? Also, if I get the hybrid I get only one aperture.

And any opinions on the differences between the factory masks and the modified masks? I don't want hard vignetting. I just love the ever so slight darkening around all edges. Would that be factory or modified?

Thanks in advance!

the third option looks like it has everything. My exprience with apertures/speed etc is that they are pretty meaningless. Film in, shoot, film out, see what you get.  My Holga fell out of my overloaded bag in a field in Cumbria last year. I got one of the new overpriced Dianas but have been disappointed with it.

i'd go for the deluxe modified holga.  i'm not sure how neccesary or how much of an improvement the pinhole versions are over the regular holga 120Pc.

I like having separate Holga cameras for pinhole and regular.

I load slower film in the pinhole Holga -usually 100 or 50 speed,
and load 400 in the regular Holga.

Or sometimes have color in one and B&W in the other.

They are cheap, so buy two!!!!

That's what I decided to do. I just ordered 2: one regular, and one pinhole (both tricked out, with all the modifications).

What the hell. You only live once.

I'm looking forward to having a light, little camera that I can carry around in my bag all the time.

You won't ever be sorry you decided on two.

And Randy at Holgamods tricks out the  best Holgas on the Planet!!!

Be sure to post some photos when you put some film through them.

hmmm, sorry but I'm not sure what your experience with holga is. if little or none I'd just get a standard 120n or one of randy's with a waist level viewfinder.

Don't all Holgas come with tripod mount now? I may be wrong but the few Holga 120N I have all has tripod mount built in.

As far as I know, yeah... all of mine have had a tripod mount and they were all the 'standard' model.

as i understand it, randy's were in a better position than where holga put their mount.  the holga tripod mount makes it hard to switch between b and normal settings. i found it to not be very steady(randy's being on the bottom of the camera - i believe makes it more steady) so gave up on using it. of course, i don't often use a tripod anyway...
