You can now call me professor Laura- hahahaha
« on: March 15, 2008, 02:26:50 AM »
Apparently I am going to be teaching beginning darkroom this summer at the local art school. It is kind of a funny story actually. I have been a lab tech/teaching assistant for years at Glassell School of Art and the photography head asked me if i wanted to teach this summer. I sent in my resume to the studio school head but never heard any thing back- this was a few months ago. Anyways, tonight I had an opening at the Museum school and one of my friends came up and called me "professor laura" because apparently i am listed in the school cataog- surprise! SO... If any of you know any one who is in Houston and wants to take a darkroom class....apparently, I am teaching one :))

rent the DVD for "Young Doctors in Love" which BTW was Demi Moore's first movie. There is a scene where the interns go to the pathology lab and the doctor there tells them something like "There are over twenty bodily fluids present in the human body and I am proud to say I have tasted all of them".

Say something like "In this class we will use over 20 different darkroom chemicals and I am proud to say that I have tasted everyone of them" then pull out a bottle of vinegar call it fixer and sprinkle it on a salad. :o

It could be a great ice breaker

I forgot to add:

You'll need to bone up on your cat critique!  It just doesn't matter what the general vibe of a beginning photo class is... adult crafty vibe or nihilistic alternapunk.  There likely will be a mountain of cat photos.

Pursuing a counseling degree in your spare time will also be helpful for when the the blank roll of film comes out of the tank and the student crumples to the floor wailing something about ..."Grandma's hair extensions..." and "...never again!"

Oh... and Wally, I just got that Demi Moore boxset also.  I love the headband!!

Yup, my cat critique needs some brushing up.... I am thinking of doing what my first photo teacher did and banning all photos of house pets, children, pictures of statues and sculptures (or any one elses artwork) including national and international monuments and possibly graveyards....unless they can somehow make them interesting. I think all of these things CAN be very interesting subjects, but I have sat in quite a few photo class critiques over the years..... They are menat to take 28 rolls of 36 exp over 7 weeks, so I might have to let some of that slide obviously. Even those with the best of eyes and unlimited inspiration may not be able to keep exciting photos up at that pace....Since they are meant to shoot 4 rolls a week, I was thinking of  making half of them exercises in DOF and such and so fort- I need to get reading upton and London- i think my 1984 edition will still be valid as it a film only course....

I do need to do this, I really do. Do you think I could pass sesame garlic dressing of as stop? Not a big fan of the vinegar :)

if you do decide to go the photo chemistry / home ec route.  You might drink some iced toner... I mean iced tea as well.
