Weekend 27th - 29th October 2023
« on: October 27, 2023, 12:27:14 PM »
Two wide shots from my old home town up north. The first is the old vicarage, not in use anymore as the priests refused to live in a cold and drafty house. The second is a shielded small boat harbour close to the town centre.

Wow, it looks like a really nice little town.
It's funny because the vicarage looks like something that could have been built somewhere in the province.
We do have different roofing materials (tin was very popular for a long time), but the music pavilion, apart from the steeper roof line, is something that was very popular for a long time.

I do like those wide shots.

I'm in the very early stages (I've only been twice) of shooting a project in a small town on the Thames estuary near here. I've yet to make contact with any of the residents.

It's all tri-x, which is what I've been shooting for about 100 years at this point. Although, with Kodak prices in the UK, I'm seriously considering switching to something cheaper.  :(

Nice shots Nigel, I like the golf "shed". I haven't shot Tri-X for at least five years, in the local shop I have to pay £14.5 for one roll. These days I buy all B&W film from Germany, it's cheaper even with shipping included. Some years ago I switched to bulk rolling, that really makes a difference.

Hi Kai-san

Tri-x varies between about £13.00 - £14.50 a roll here at the moment. I think as we're outside the EU (don't get me started) the shipping from Germany would be more expensive, although I might have a look. I've never really got on with HP5, so I've just shot a roll of Fomapan 400 as a test. I'm going to see how that looks, otherwise, I'm not sure what to do.

I'm no fan of HP5 either, and I have shot a lot of it (bought a load on the cheap once). In the ISO 400 range I shoot mostly Fomapan 400 and Rollei RPX 400, but I don't think they look much like Tri-X. I quite like the Bergger Pancro 400, but it's around £10 per roll. Then there is the Agfa APX 400 at around £7 per roll, but I have not tried it (it doesn't come in bulk).

The only Kodak stock I've been shooting for a few years is the stuff I have in my freezer.
And strangely, I'm quite happy with the cheaper alternatives.
I've been using Foma in 35mm (bulk rolled) for years and strangely am starting to quite like it. It's definitely not horrible for the price.
Granted it doesn't give me that lovely Neopan look, but it's really good.

A few shots from the Holga which I had set to cloudy on a bright sunny day so I underdeveloped to try and rescue them but it looks like the camera shake effected me more. The best of a bad bunch from Hasting beach on HP5 AND 510 Pryo

I only noticed Tri-X prices the other week as I was thinking of a project, for the winter evenings but got scared off by the price. I am a fan of HP5  for general use though. I find it useable in most circumstances with most developers I use, resonably priced too.

Well, HP5 was the British version of Tri-X. Both are quite similar in various ways, so I don't see any reason to go for Tri-X unless you get a good deal on slightly expired stock.

The last 40 rolls or so of my HP5 haul I swapped one to one for Kodak Portra 400, both 135 and 120. I thought it was a good deal. The guy I swapped with had a remark about HP5 which I still remember, he said it was grey as an overcast day in England.  :)

Which I would interpret as meaning he wasn't exposing or developing it optimally.

Definitely, I've still got a few rolls of 1989 HP5 (not the plus version) and it's still decent.

I can't properly describe it, there's something about the grain on HP5, it just doesn't work for me. These things don't have to be logical, I suppose.
APX400 is currently £7.00 in the UK, so that's bearable.

Have you thought about Orwo?
I know that their Original Wolfen P400 is out there and sells for 11.70 euros a roll.
There's also Foma Action 400 which, while different, can be quite pleasing.

I haven’t tried the Orwo, but I do have a couple of rolls of Fomapan 400 in the fridge ready to go!

FWIW the manager at my local lab says that Foma is the last remaining film manufacturer to have not reduced the amount of silver in its emulsion coatings. I tried a roll of Foma Classic 100 in 120 a couple of weeks ago and need to retrieve it from the lab, and will hopefully have something to post soon.
