The Film Photographers Map
« on: April 13, 2019, 02:26:05 PM »
I'd like to share a really nice site that was mentioned in a number of film photography podcasts: https://thefilmphotographersmap.com/ Unfortunately, there's nobody remotely close to my location (yet). I guess that I need to keep an eye on the map. :)

I opened an account to see the map... very disappointing as we're only 3 in the entire province!
Though I must say that since most Quebeckers don't speak English, it's not entirely surprising.

Tthe map is still very new and word-of-mouth takes some time. I'm optimistic that it'll fill up eventually.

When I saw that they use Google maps I just dropped it. I will not give away any information for Google to sell on what is now a multi million dollar business, the trade of private data. I'm not voluntarily feeding those greedy tax dodgers.

The way I see it, if you have either a Gmail or YouTube account they already have all that information based on your IP address. And with all the information your browser already sends, even if they don't have your name they already know who you are.

Just to give you an idea of how much stuff is available to any website you go to, check this out

All computers have an IP address, and there is little you can do about that. Some software companies like Avast offers to make you "invisible", but I bet their software has a backdoor were CIA and NSA can get access. The only secure option is to disappear into the dark net using Tor or similar solutions. But if you do that, corrupt politicians all over this planet will declare that you are a criminal. None of them will stand up for your privacy.
I want to make life as difficult as possible for Gaggle and their likes and I do not use or subscribe to their services. And I will vote for any party that aims to tax these ******* till they bleed.  8)

Today I got in my news feed an article about the d.tube website. It's an alternative to youtube that is based on Distributed Hash Tables.
I don't know how good it really is but it seems to be an interesting proposition.

I also use a few plugins to help manage privacy. I use Disconnect and the EFF's Privacy Badger. I also use Cookie Autodelete to remove the accumulating junk.

EDIT: OK, I just checked out d.tube and it looks like a lot of the content is a bit crap. And there is nothing about photography... or at least anything that the site will show me in the search box without loging in...

If there's nothing about photography it must be crap!  ;D
I use anti-spyware programs, ad-blocker etc. There's probably more like this I should investigate, but it's not easy to get time for it all.

Though this is already going off topic rapidly, I have to chip in and give this thread the final blow into "off topic doom": I recommend uMatrix, uBlock Origin as well as "HTTPS Everywhere" as browser add-ons. They help quite a bit with keeping web sites in check that use stuff like Google Maps, especially uMatrix. With uMatrix you could browse the Film Photographers Map without Google knowing it (you won't be able to display maps or enter your location, though). All of these browser add-ons should be available for Chrome variants and for Firefox.

To get slightly back on topic: you could suggest to the site's maintainer to switch from Google Maps to OpenStreetmap. However, he'll need to replace the Google Maps' location finder with a service that will allow for putting coordinates to a postal code (something that OpenStreetmap doesn't do sufficiently well) and these services hardly ever come for free if you want to use their APIs. That means that either sites like the Film Photographers Map start costing money so that they can afford the fee for the API access to a GIS database or we need to live with the fact that Google knows that our IP is currently looking at a certain map on a certain site. Don't get me wrong, Kai, I'm with you regarding data privacy and I respect your motivation not to participate.

Don't worry CS, I'm quite OK with that. Besides I know a few film enthusiasts in the vicinity if I feel like company. As regards privacy I was under surveillance in the 70's for political activism and the Police Security Agency has a file on me. Frankly I couldn't care less, but I will defend anybody's right to protect their privacy.

And rightly doing so.
We're lucky here in Canada that we never really had to go through a period like that.
