AI starts hand coloring
« on: March 07, 2019, 03:31:03 PM »
I guess it was bound to happen. But the results from this one are really surprisingly good.
A company in Singapore has trained a computer to add color to B&W images. I was curious so I sent a few pictures just for fun. Here are the results.

That's fun Francois.  It needs something in the image like a person, the sky or vegetation.  If it doesn't know what color something should be it gives it a very muted color or leaves it black and white.  I took a color photo, converted it to black and white then let it turn it back to color.  It didn't do too bad, it could have put more blue in the water.  Obviously it didn't know that there was red in her strap but it did do surprising well with her hair color.

here's a few old photos that I tried.  The first two look pretty good, the baby looks like it's been working in a coal mine.

I discovered that it doesn't like overly out of focus pictures.
And it doesn't know that houses are not green. It also can't tell what glass really is...
here's a few more
