Topic: NYC in five hours and ten miles

Time to get into the city has been short lately, so when I had a few hours recently I jumped on an early train, took the subway to lower Manhattan, and started walking. In the five hours I had before I had to get back on the train home, I covered ten miles on foot, crossing the East River twice via two different bridges and a brief jaunt in Brooklyn, across town through the Village to the High Line, up the west side, and back across town to Grand Central. I carried my Hexar AF loaded with Tri-X.

Thanks for sharing this excellent work. I really like your style, especially the twisted perspective shots are incredibly good. They have a very dynamic feeling. In particular the pedestrian crossing with the taxi (well timed shot, too), the bridge pylon, and the shoes. Also, the way you play with perspective is very interesing. And the half-antlered deer shot is very funny. I caught myself trying to emulate your style last weekend in Leipzig (and I failed miserably; still had a lot of fun). If you're going to be in Germany sometime, let me know so that we can go on a photo walk and I'll buy you a beer afterwards (that's the least that I can do; your shots make me want to shoot cities more, instead of only landscapes, which is quite a feat). The Tri-X really fits the mood. Good choice.

I appreciate the offer (I'm not one to refuse beer). Not sure when I'll be back in Germany, but I haven't made any summer travel plans yet, so you never know. Should you make it over to this side of the pond, be sure to let me know.

A lot of the shots I try are experimental, at least to some degree - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There's no harm in trying new perspectives, even if they look crazy in the viewfinder, whether you're trying to emulate a look or work out your own. I find urban settings tend to have lots of lines to play with, which is obviously something I like to do.

Great stuff! That second one in particular looks like it could have been taken 2 centuries ago What speed were you rating the Tri-X at? Not sure if it's this new monitor I got or the Caffenol, but that's a lotta grain for Tri-X...

[Could easily be this new monitor I got ... haven't dialed it in, and annoyingly a bunch of the adjustments are unavailable for some reason. May have to spring for a really good monitor...]

I shot it at 320. It was a bit of an experiment; in retrospect I should have stuck with my usual half box speed. That said, I didn't think they looked terribly grainy. I think some of it is the fact that I downsize to 1024px on the long side before unloading, which Flickr then compresses. But even so, they didn't seem unusually grainy to me.

The boots- so many questions?
It's a really enjoyable set, the shot looking up the bridge upright stood out for me' so much detail all the way up. Also thought that they are slightly grainy but that adds to it most definitely.

Thanks Irv. The boots are a mystery. There was nobody around, no sign of where they came from, nothing - just a pair of workboots on a sidewalk. Fascinating.

I don't think to check the boards other than the Main Forum often enough.  I just now saw this essay.  Great work. Thanks for posting.  My feet are sore just thinking about the amount of ground you covered.  Well worth the effort.  Bravo.

Thanks, Blaxton. Good shoes are a vital part of the street photographer's kit, so I didn't suffer any significant ill effects from my wanderings; having a beer on the train home helps to mitigate any residual discomfort. Glad you liked the photos.
