Bad weather = darkroom
« on: November 12, 2007, 05:24:30 PM »
Woke up to bright sunshine and a slight breeze over the cliffs so took off for a stroll to the village post-office. Lovely walk looking out over the Minch taking a few snaps with the Ilford Sporti - as you do. Any further snapping [and hanging the washing out] was curtailed but an incoming storm so I set to in the Jon Norfolk Suite [aka darkroom] to play.
Playing with digital negatives prior to doing some cyanotypes in the near future. This is an image I have shown before but re-worked and stained. I rather like it.
Was taken on the Somerset Levels in England.
. Seems a bit more grainy on the scan than it really is. Pity, because I like it grainy.

A shot like this makes me wonder ... has anyone ever printed on vellum or parchment?

I'm pretty sure you can print on whatever you want if you're coating your own...within limits of course. Then there's liquid light where you can print onto walls even.

Though, if you plan on moving, I don't think the landlord would appreciate seeing a big cut out hole in the wall (think of Mr. Bean and his remodelling job ;) )

I like the image very much.

Little late on this, but yes vellum is a great media for printing.  It will bleed depending on the surface finish but can make some very wonderful images, I have a whole series of landscape using this method.

Here is one example.  I hand painted this vellum image w/watercolors.  Takes some experimenting to get familiar with results of printing and coloring.

I once tried printing on vellum by sticking it into my inkjet printer!
Not for the faint of heart I must say. Do use the thick stuff or you'll get wrinkling and a nasty squeaking sound... not recommended to do this under warranty.
Funny thing is that when you look on the front side, the image is quite sharp with a tiny bit of bleed. But the best effect is when you turn the image around and look at it by reflection! Some of the ink saturates the paper while at some other spots you can see the white paper... Here are 2 scans from one of my WTCD pictures... I used thin vellum and you can clearly see the wrinkling and the place where the paper cleaned my print heads :)
