Most thrift stores are getting smarter about selling stuff like that.  I know Goodwill will put cameras like that on their auction site.  Every now and then you can find a good plastic model in the bin with the crappy point and shoot cameras but anything with shiny chrome and leather will usually be separated out.  I did pick up a nice working Asahi Pentax K1000 a few weeks ago at a thrift store for $10.  I also found a Canon FD 24mm f/2.8 lens in excellent condition from the same thrift store for $10.  I'll be going back there again soon.

My best thrift store find was a Rollei 35B for $5. I'd found a few other good ones, a Pentax H2, a Petri 7s, but all of these were back about 7-10 years ago. Good old stuff never shows up anymore.

Or they ask too much for it.
lately I've seen a Nikon FE with a 35mm, 50mm 1.8 and a zoom for 99$...

Sometimes I don't think they take condition into account, they just list it at the highest price they saw on eBay.

I'm jealous of people who live in less densely populated areas, as my impression is that this happens more often there. In NYC, either the shopkeepers are way too savvy not to do a quick ebay search, or the product is snapped up within 10 seconds of the price tag being affixed :D

That is better than my very used but perfectly functional Old Standard Rolleiflex, for which I paid $30. I'm not sure how to stack it up against my mint Hexar Rhodium, which was free but broken; it is now working perfectly and apparently had a list price of $1600 when new.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

we've got places like that here... a camera can be worn, torn and jammed up but still those silly prices. do they actually think that they're operating in the same kind of market??

I think that really, the shops can't be blamed for trying to maximise their profits. You really can't blame them, as they are now filled with people trying to buy things to resell on eBay.

These things cost so much money simply because we collectors fetishise them. If we were a bit less precious, we wouldn't be in this situation.

One thing I noticed is that in most places they check the current listings and not the actual sold listings

I enjoyed the story of how he turned spare time into $1 into a scratch-off into the M2
