Photographing Civil Rights, Up North and Beyond Dixie

A great series of images from the 40s and 50s. Really inspiring on both the photographic and the personal level.

Nigel, great post.  Thank you.

Although I've read a lot about the American civil rights movement and seen stills, documentary and biopic films, it's always seemed like a long time ago.  However, a lot of those photos were taken in the 60's and one in 1970 (when I was 9).  It's really shocking to think that even in the last third of the 20th Century, people were struggling for recognition of equality in one of the "developed" nations.  And I'm not pointing fingers at America; it happens everywhere - and not just based on skin colour.

Excellent photos which should be a salutary lesson for us all that we should stand up to this sort of prejudice - and our governments should be taking the lead.

Yes, but I'm afraid that Kings legendary speach today would begin with the words: I had a dream ....

Civil rights are in need, still or again, everywhere in the world, also in democracies. Thank you so much for the link to the strong pictures, Nigel.
