Solar Eclipse.
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:32:33 PM »
As many of you know, there will be a solar eclipse across the United Kingdom tomorrow at around 8.30am, when the country will be plunged into darkness.  Northern Scotland will get the best view, with 98% of the sun covered, whilst London can expect a paltry 85% an hour later at 9.30am.

Hopefully our national power grid will cope with the nation’s solar panels shutting down for two hours, thus depriving us of 1.5% of our power needs just as there is a huge surge in demand as people rush to switch their lights on and make a cup of tea at the same time.

According to the Daily Telegraph the biggest threat to our enjoyment of the eclipse comes from a blanket of lethal smog that is set to blanket London causing a pea souper, the likes of which has not been experienced since Jack the Ripper stalked the streets of Whitechapel.

So, if we don’t die of asthma, are not murdered by Jack the Ripper, and if we can make a cup of tea, a real treat is in store for us all and for the budding Patrick Moores out there, there is a once or twice in a lifetime’s opportunity to take a photograph of small black disc.

Contrary to earlier comments, I will not be staring wide eyed at the sun through my grandfather’s WW1 German binos in fact I probably will give the whole thing a miss, having been totally underwhelmed by the last eclipse in 1999, but this is an ideal opportunity for fellow filmwasters to share their experiences of the eclipse and perhaps some photos of that small black disc.

So post them here.

there will be no plunging into darkness unless you are under the line of totality...and it's a gradual plunge when totality happens.
Even at 85 % coverage, the Sun will shine brightly.

It will be a "different" light, but it's hard to explain unless you have experienced it.

The important thing is to experience it. Even in partiality, it is very cool.

Wishing you all clear skies!
Becky

So the sky won't fall on my head?

Unfortunately astrobeck, we're more likely to grow a second head than experience clear skies today.  It's as grey as anything out in Broxbourne this morning.

It was magnificent, but being at work and in meetings meant it was difficult to get out to shoot it. But at least I got to witness it, albeit through an office window. My colleague being an astrophysicist did help, he brought some glasses to the meeting.

btw, a friend had stacked all his filters he could fit on one lens and got a decent shot with that :)

my wife was elsewhere with her dad and he had several overexposed glass plates stacked along with some sunglasses to look through :D
