Frame advance lever problem on Pentax 67II
« on: November 08, 2014, 03:21:01 PM »
Alright 67II users, I need some input. A few weeks ago while hiking/camping, the film advance lever on my 67 TWICE locked up mid-roll. It wouldn't budge after firing off a frame to allow me to advance to the next frame. I decided to sacrifice the roll I had just loaded — only two exposures in — and open up the back. I pulled out the film, released the film spool holders and tried again. Still nothing. But after about a minute of jiggling the film advance back and forth it reluctantly advanced, fired, then was back to normal for the whole day. The same thing happened again the next day. Four frames in, fired one off, tried to advance. Locked up. I tried jiggling the advance lever again and it didn't work, so i just threw the camera in my bag and walked on. After some Googling, this seems to be a pretty common problem with this camera.

Anyone have this issue or heard of it? From what I've read, people are saying to advance slowly each time and stop at the end of the advance for a second or two, then return to the start position. I'm really hoping this is not a recurring problem because it was totally of the blue, and I'm just glad I wasn't shooting client work when it happened.

I don't have a P67 but I'm wondering if the camera has ever been in for a CLA?
There could be something stuck inside the advance mechanism.

Film is the vinyl record of photography.

I don't have a 67ii but have a 6x7MLU & 67 and haven't experienced this problem. Assuming the shooting cycle had finished, shutter closed, mirror-down, lens aperture open etc...

The film advance on the 6x7 & 67 (30yrs on) has been suggested to be a weak spot - I was told to wind-on slowly, then guide the lever back with my thumb rather than letting it snap back -I don't know if this is relevant to the 67ii.

Thanks for the help and suggestions, all. It hasn't happened since so I suppose I'll just wait and see if it keeps acting up. I might need to send it in for a CLA — I'm the second owner and I'm certain the first never had it cleaned.
