Coming Attractions: New Drama Series About Magnum Photos!
« on: October 14, 2014, 04:35:42 PM »
It's just been released that Carnival Films, producers of Downton Abbey, are teaming up with the Magnum agency to create a drama series about the early days of the agency and its founders!: bit.ly/1sHANdl

I cannot wait to see this!

nice! I've actually been enjoying Downton Abbey but it has turned into just spinning the same old wheels lately.

Should be good, although the same people were also involved in Spies of Warsaw... which on paper should have been amazing but ended up being clichéd and tired.

We live in hope!

I wonder why a "drama" rather than a "documentary". Hopefully, they'll stick close to the truth.  I haven't watched any of Downton Abbey but it seems to be popular.....

I'm tired of seeing drama everywhere. That's why I turn to documentaries more often than not.

Money I would guess. Its an easy pitch - "Downton Abbey meets Mad Men." It writes itself - interesting cast of international characters, the high drama of wars & relationships and temperamental artistes.

I think it's ripe for a drama. Looking forward to it ... as long as it's not like Downton!

You are really not selling it to me, Mike!!  :o  I'd much prefer properly researched, factual content with lots of tech and photo examples.  I'll probably still end up watching it, though...

Ha - Nor to me frankly. I work in a low hanging branch of the film business and I regularly hear pitches not unlike "Mad Men meets Downton." Long ago I came to terms with the fact most new TV & movies are just not made for me! Ultimately it'll depend on who's writing it, who's directing and who's in it. But bear in mind something doesn't have to be good to be saleable or popular.

Since it is from the Downton producers I suspect it'll be a pretty heady soap opera. My wife watches Downton and I'll catch glimpses of it as I'm coming through - its pretty ridiculous. Though I do like the dogs they have in the show!

Magnum, and the lives of the founders, have already been documented, and dramatizing it brings the story to a completely different audience. Photographers would be interested in a Ken Burns-style documentary, but there is a much larger audience for a drama based on the lives of real historical people.

One thing I don't think we'll see anytime soon: Magnum - the comedy...
Though come to think of it, the people who worked for them probably have some pretty funny stories to tell, a bit like the guys from National Geo.

I atended a talk by Martin Parr, comedy indeed. He could make a career as a stand up comedian!
Looking forward to this, fingers crossed - it might be good  :)

Better still .... Magnum the Musical. I can see it now ... The spectacle, the costumes, the jazzhands.

Too sad they don't make musicals anymore... I always loved them...

Musical TV Shows? Perhaps everybody remembers the stink of Cop Rock.

Magnum the Musical would completely work I think.

I picture it more like The Sopranos but with cameras in stead of guns.

Strangely, I've never given much thought to how someone might choreograph Robert Capa tripping the light fantastic across a Normandy beach-head whilst all and sundry come under fire from heavy machine gun positions, artillery shelling and Stuka dive bombers.

It might look a bit like a musical version of "Saving Ryan's Privates"..... :o

I've seen it, too, and agree there's nothing like the real footage.  "World at War" was produced at the point when I hit my teens in the early 70's and was compulsory viewing in our house. I'm pretty sure it was one of the primary influences that helped spark my interest in modern, world history.

All joking aside, I really hope they do the subject justice and make it as real and close to the truth as possible.
