August 1-3
« on: August 01, 2014, 03:41:34 AM »
It's already August, in Greenwich.

I'm feeling accomplished, having processed my way through many rolls of backlogged film.  My June trip to Europe rolls are finally all developed.  More from that another time.  I also found time to use the MOD54 reel I purchased last January--maiden voyage--to develop these TRI-X sheets exposed in September 2011 of the then newly condemned Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  (There is a new bridge in place, now.)  The MOD54 works beautifully.  Thank you, Morgan O'Donovan.

A couple of (probably rather trite) images from NYC from me this week.

What are you talking about? Those are great, Andrej! I've lived in this damn city for 15 years and still haven't captured images as nice as those :)

The second one was taken from the Williamsburg waterfront, right? I love that place :) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152404897797278.1073741890.539577277&type=1&l=58d9c1a7d4

Agreed - those pinholes are outstanding! And thil, I love that street capture.

I've got the polar opposite of those sharp pinholes - some fuzzy Holga shots. Something happened when developing this roll - I think it got a little creased in the reel or something. So there was a watermark or something all the way down the film right out of the tank >:(

I still like the shots, though. Holga, Efke 100, Caffenol.

Some outstanding photos on this weekend's thread. Thil's street capture with the juxtaposed stripes / lines is fabulous. Also, the car's headlamps look like eyes and the spoiler looks like a smiling mouth (at least to me). A punchy, B&W version would be awesome.  I think Paul Mitchell's getting ready to go for a double-FRPS with brass knobs on. Those pinholes are magic. I just love Leonore's shot of the Flatiron building and clock. Yes, I've seen this before, but this has a quality I haven't seen before. I could go on....but I won't.

Mine are a couple of very random moments when I just picked up the camera in the American diner (in Aldeburgh, Suffolk), didn't focus, didn't look through the viewfinder and just pulled the trigger. Voigtlander Bessa R4M, 21mm/f4 Color-Skopar, Kodak Ektar.

I hope that I am not violating protocol with this second weekend post.  I just finished processing the last of my Memorial Bridge negatives from September 2011.  After years of tray processing sheet film in the dark, it's a pleasure to use the MOD54 tank system.

The Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine is now gone--replaced with a sleek new bridge of similar design.  Someday soon I must return and make pictures of it.

My first attempt at push processing! I shot a friend's gig on Tri-X at 1600 and stand-developed in Rodinal 1:100 for an hour. I'm pretty damn shocked that there are even images on the film, never mind decent-quality images! The feeling was on par with what I felt the very first time I home-developed ... film is simply MAGIC :)

Any other tips to push processing? Can I improve the shadow detail by letting it stand even longer? Next time I push I'm going to try HC110 dilution H for 20 minutes, can't remember where I read that but it seems about right.

There's not much you can do for improving shadow detail when you push film since what you're capturing is the shadow detail. You just make it develop longer so that it becomes your main image.

As for HC-110, there's a ton of ways to push Tri-X with it.
Just check out Kodak publication F-4017, it lists all the grubby details. But for small tank processing, it's only 6 minutes @ 68°F for EI 1600 (HC-110 dil.B). They don't recommend pushing to 3200 with HC-110 but I know it's possible. Just not up to Kodak's quality standards.

Thanks, LD and Satish. The Holga obviously has limitations, but what sold me on it was that it really does bring something different to certain shots, and once you get used to that quality, it's easier to spot a good "Holga shot." The flatiron just screamed Holga to me to get a sort of nostalgic, old-New York feel.

And Satish, that band shot is really great.  LD, that really does look like a diner. Such great shots!

KevinAllan, that statue looks remarkably like ones that I have seen in New Orleans. I wonder if they were made by the same artist.

As for you, jojonas: first, I adore that red spinny shot!

Second (and this is directed at TinTin as well), I second your comment. Moar kittehs!  ;D

I don't like posting more than one picture in these weekend threads, to leave room for everyone else, but since there have been THREE requests .... :D

There's an empty lot near where I live (in fact, literally "kitty" corner from the address of the rangefinder I just bought!) that is home to no less than a dozen stray cats. People feed them regularly, and I'll bet there are no rats in that particular lot! :D I think Astoria may be stray cat central, because one of my co-workers (lives 1 block from me) supports about 16-20 cats outside his apartment, then there's this lot as well. All that being said, though I love all animals I'm not really a cat person, I far prefer dogs :)
