Yes, that is my home town - Newcastle.
I've not met the photographer yet but he is co-organiser of a photography festival in Newcastle later this year, so I may get to meet him then :

I spent 3 very happy years as a student in Newcastle between 84 and 87.

Thursday was nurses night at the Stage Door, Friday neet in the Big Market or doon the Level 2 disco in the union, Saturday neet student parties in Fenham or (if we were feeling posh) in West Jesmond.  Happy days.  The bottles of dog, the tabs and the kebabs, watching the locals fight and the girls wearing next to nothing even though it was -5 in winter.  I loved the city, if only I'd had my holga back then.

Francois, I suspect you have committed as mortal a sin as an Englishman mistaking Quebec for British Columbia (or vice versa).  I'd steer clear of the Tuxedo Princess for a while if I was you though.

I know... We have the same thing in the province itself!
There's a small town who's main street has been the divide between two regions for at least a hundred years. It all started when the clergy decided to put the church on one side of the street rather than the other. The other half of the town was so p***** off that they became protestant so that they could have their own church on their own side of the street!

Why Aye man!! Learn yersel Geordie!!

Nurses night = a couple of hundred drunken Geordie nurses.  In other words, carnage
neet =  night
doon= down
bottles of dog = bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale, the local intoxicant.
tabs = cigarettes
Tuxedo Princess = a liner converted into a nightclub moored in Newcastle city centre.  It had a revolving dance floor and was usually filled with a couple of hundred drunken Geordie girls.  In other words, carnage.

Tuxedo Princess has been gone a few years now. I should point out that some residents of Newcastle are very civilised ...
