Munich - advice on short trip required, please.....
« on: March 04, 2014, 09:12:03 PM »
Lara and I have just booked a cheap and cheerful 3 day / 2 night trip to Munich later this month.

Day one (a Monday) is mostly accounted for as Lara (a bit of a petrol-head) has always wanted to see BMW world.  Likely to be back into city centre early evening for beer and sausages....

Day two will include (at some point during the day) a trip to the Bernheimer Gallery on Brienner Strasse in the old city as there's an exhibition of Michael Kenna's work called "Light on Asia" and I won't be missing that.  Other than that, we're foot-loose and fancy-free.

Day three allows for more exploration of Munich until we have to board the train (mid-afternoon) to get back to the airport.

Do we have anyone with knowledge of Munich who can suggest some places - ideally easy walking - around town that are worth a visit?  I'll be taking a camera with a view towards doing a bit of street shooting.  We're not really fussed about going to the Olympic stadium; we're more interested in historic places - something with a bit of ambience that defines Munich.

Any advice received with thanks - but we've not got long to get our thoughts / plans together.  Cheers, er, I mean.....Prost!!  ;)

Can't say I know Munich too well, you'd perhaps better wait for Urban to drop in, but I always liked just walk around.. In fact I plan to drive to Munich myself next Sat - mostly because of the Kenna exhibition...

It's a very nice city.. The surroundings near the Bernheimer Gallery are quite nice  (Pinakothek, usw...), the old town streets... I especially like the parks - Englischer Garten or the Schlosspark Nymphenburg. And if the weather is bad you can't go wrong with Deutches Museum...
Website of sorts, as well as ipernity thing.

Cheers Andrej.

We're staying on the road that leads to the Nymphenburg Palace, so we might check that out. If the old city is as you desrivbe it, we'll probably spend most of the day mooching around the shops and galleries.

I can't wait to see Michael Kenna's exhibition but I doubt I'll be bringing any prints home with me.... :'(

Hey Paul, you should meet up with me. I'm currently working in town ;D

It all depends on what you want to do. Schloss Nymphenburg is definitely nice, there's also a botanical garden, a huge zoo, aquarium, and many, many parks.

Hi Urban.

Sounds great.  Just sent you a PM and email.  We're staying not far from the schloss - looks like a big old German equivalent of one of our National Trust places.  Mmmmm? An FW meet up in Germany?  Has that been done before, I wonder...??

Cheers, Paul.

Schloss Nymphenburg is modelled after Versailles, but obviously smaller :)

I'll get back to you about when we can meet. That should be fun! Unfortunately for you it won't be the first German filmwasters meetup. I met with imagesfrugales and Dynamo last year in Heidelberg ;)
