Today's NY Times (Candace Feit)
« on: September 16, 2013, 04:23:13 PM »
A friend who shoots with a Hasselblad sent me this from today's New York Times.   He says the visible frame lines are signature Hassy and was impressed that the Times chose to show them.

These are definitely Hasselblad frames.
You can tell by the double V notches on the left.

There's quite a few stories out there trying to explain how they came to be. All of them fascinating.

I love leaving the edges on film images and Hasselblad edges are very attractive (I think). I also always just think of thinking of the edges as part of the image as a good composition exercise.

As a Hassy 500c/m user, I'm aware of the frame markings but I usually crop just inside of them to remove them. It never occurred to me that people might actually want to see them included as part of the photo. Maybe I'll include them in future posts....

Funny thing is that at one time, photo editors were looking for those markings on the slides they received. Slides that had the V marks on them were instantly said to be better pictures than those without them!

Also, the notches were the source of the big Bronica scandal years ago. In a bronica add, they were bragging about the quality of their optics and cameras yet the image they were showing contained the tell-tale signs of being shot with a hassy!

That was a nice story, living in a shack, even temporarily, can be challenging when you are not used to.
