Long exposure + human body.....?
« on: August 15, 2013, 10:10:57 AM »
Hi all
Im really fond of the different long exposure seascapes Ive seen both done with pinholes and lensed canmeras.
An idea with a human figure in a long exposure coastal picture keeps pressing on in my head but the obvious problem is of cause how to keep this figure/person reasonable sharp in the final pic at the same time as maintaining the movement of the sea?. off course first thing is to have the person lie down in a steady position but what else?
Any Ideas as to how to pull this off?
Best regards

"The secret is; hold still please!"

And if that doesnt work you could always insert a long metal spike through the head, down the spine and out the feet

The hold still added with a distant view should camouflage any slight movement by the sitter.

You could also use a Victorian era daguerreotype head resting jig  ;)

What about a mannequin? If you dont have to show the face.

Thanks for the replies.
Andrea what a great shot. It was something a bit like that I had in mind. Have you any detail on weather etc?

When playing around with long exposures and light painting, I've popped the model with a strobe at the end of the exposure.

If I remember correctly - and I may not, it was misty a bit and there were no midges despite the lack of wind for a change. I think it may have rained in the week before - and possibly the week after too.  I used pan-f @ 50 probably, stopped right down and with a polariser thing in front of the lens thing. It may well have been winter or possibly Autumn or Spring - sometime when there wasn't too much light anyway.

It wasn't actually a light sabre in Eve's hand, merely an umbrella that looked like one with an umbrella attachment. Obviously.

Oh, and I froze Eve cryogencally before placing her on the rock. Bit of a pain thawing her out afterwards but hey, it's what one does for Art. It is Art isn't it? This bit wasn't true as it happens - but should have been :-)

You can also cast them in Carbonite... but it's not very convenient ;)

Youre right Francois I think Ill stick to Cryotechniques. Maybe Andrea has some hints. Is the liquid Nitrogen available through ebay? Which cryo preversatives to use and how to administer them? etc.
tsk tsk all the things we photographers has to go through to get the shot :)

I've never done a comparative test, but by instinct, during a long exposure I always flash the model in the middle of the exposure, rather than at the end. My idea is that by the middle of the exposure the model should be relaxed, but still. I'd imagine that any movement is likely to be at the beginning of a pose (when they settle-in) or at the end (when they are cold/bored/fed-up).
Hope this helps
