Do you own a nice vintage hi-fi?
« on: August 07, 2013, 05:25:42 PM »
An idea - I'd like to photograph some nice vintage or valve hi-fi on Polaroids. I have the Polas - do you have the gear? As a thank you for letting me snap your treasures, you're very welcome to keep some of the Polas after I've scanned them. As I live near Oxford (and hate driving), I'd prefer it to be as close as possible or in London so I can take the Tube.

Any takers? As I wish to contribute to the Exa book, I may bring one of those with me too, if I can secure one in time.

Many thanks
David

I have a nice restored / upgraded Quad 405 amp plus Quad 34 preamp
and  Marantz 8063 Signature Cd player, also restored /upgraded, but
I'm in Croatia so no Polas (as I don't have any Polaroid camera).

Yes - but not much to look at as it's fairly modern / minimalist:

- Rega Planar 3 turntable (black) + RB300 Arm
- Naim CD5 CD player
- Naim 5-series Pre-amp
- Naim 5-series Power amp
- Naim Flatcap power supply regulator
- Royd RR1 floor-standing speakers in maple (bi-wired)

I live in north Essex and you're welcome to photograph the kit if you really want to......

Would a local high-end hi-fi shop not be a better starting point?

Hi Late

That's a nice rig - thanks for the offer - but I'm hoping for something which either glows or is vintage or both!

No worries. You probably need someone with a Michell Gyrodec and a Separo P88i / Unison Research P30 valve amp (or similar), etc.....

Well, How about:
a trash found Yamaha A-450 amp
a 1$ Sony CD player
a 1$ Hitachi HT-12 turntable
and a 5$ Harman Kardon TU905 tuner?

Oh yeah... at the price I paid, it doesn't include any frequent flyer points to get you over  :o

I have a lot of Sansui audio gear. They sold the (newer) Sansui trademark brand name, because of an accounting scandal. I know a number of years ago a few of the engineers was still around in Hashimoto electric and were rebuilding and making new and upgrading transformers, yes the still use the (old) Sansui trademark name in their products. I also have a Sansui AU-111 with Hashimoto transformers.

DonkeyDave: I'd like to snap your clock, but the Pola exposure would be so slow that the LEDs would just be a blur!

Somebody must have some funky kit? Where are the ESL 57s and all the glow-in-the-dark goodies? Or do we spend most of our disposable income on visual stimuli on this site?

Yeah! I was at one of my favorite church rummage sales when I saw the Harman Kardon box. I opened it and there sat the tuner in mint condition. It was in its original box like if nobody ever touched it! I asked the guy who sold the stuff and he said 5 bucks.... lets just say it was one of those times where the wallet came out really fast!

What I like is that it's a non-digital model with the good old scroll wheel. That's nice since I listen to some stations which don't come through with enough power for some of those auto seeking systems to grab a solid lock on them. Also, the wheel is mounted on ball bearings... smooth :)

Also, thanks for the photo comment. I really ought to get shooting more than I have this summer...
