New weekend, new month, new camera...

Riding around with my new Hasselblad SWC/M. Love it, though it has a leak, I assume from the darkslide slot. Will test my theory with a bit of tape!

After several weeks off from the weekend threads (I was away on vacation), here's a few Rolleiflex shots on Pan F+:

I've finally gotten round to scanning some of the images I made on the FW Wales trip.

This was at Nash Point very early on the Saturday morning.

It's 33C in Broxbourne, too damned hot for cycling so the wife has made me paint the spare bedroom  :-\ :-\ :-\

The last time I was this hot was in Baja California in May, so here are a couple of snapshots of La Isla Espirito Santo.  Holga plus Porta, and a seagull.

Inspiring images, guys.  First image: Olympus IS-1000, Agfa APX 100, and
second is a test of Mir-1SH 37mm, 1:2.8 soviet lens,Flektogon cousin on an
old Cosina HiLite body. Great lens! Used Agfa APX 100 too.

Superb shots again.

- Sean's clearly getting the hang of that SWC
- Love that 2nd shot O2 Pilot
- That's a stunner, Becky
- Envious, as ever, Paul Mitchell  ;)
- Great portrait Ed
- Not sure if we go through Pampa, Phil, but that's the sort of thing I'd love to see on our holiday in October

Mines a snap from Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire. Haven't shot slide for a while - this is Provia 100 via my Mamiya 7 with (I think) the 65mm lens (might be the 43mm). Very little done to it.

Well done Dave!  ;D

I am back from a 10 days trip in Iceland, the idea was to cool down from hot Spain, and it worked  ;)  Mostly family pictures and very few street shots  :-[  not easy to compaginate both things...  ::)

I ordered one book, Odur, from who I believe is and icelandic photographer, David Portseinsson.

Congrats Sean on the new member to the family. Couple from me playing with some new Tmax 100 I'm liking the results. Also some random Holga shot in for good measure.

Sean and Phil,

I would love to try an SWC.  Do you both shoot handheld, or are they better on a tripod?  I've never been comfortable using a tripod for most of my stuff, but if it's mostly a handheld piece I'm going to have to start saving up my money, or selling off some other camera gear, or both.

Thanks for any info you have...

I'm sure Mark and Phil will respond separately on what they actually do but as a rule of thumb (and assuming you have relatively steady hands) if the shutter speed (in fractions of a second) is greater than the focal length (in millimetres) of the lens you're using, chances are you'll get acceptably sharp photos. For example, the SWC has a 38mm lens. Therefore, if you're shooting at 1/38th or faster (okay 1/50th is probably nearest real shutter speed) acceptable sharpness shouldn't be an issue.

Hand-holding always introduces motion blur - however microscopic - but if you're shooting 1/125th or faster, there's an even better chance you'll be fine, hand-held.

The only situation where this falls down is when you're shooting moving objects - but I doubt anyone would ever use an SWC to shoot a motorcycle race or air show..!!

However, if absolute critical focus is required, a tripod and a cable release is the safest option.

I've only shot a couple rolls through it so far. I'm a 99.9% handheld shooter. And i'm used to shooting super slow speeds with my polaroid 190 (8 to 15 regularly). I don't have the patience to pull out the tripod, set it up, etc. i'm usually on the move when I shoot.

That being said, the one weakness i've discovered with the SWC, at least with my current viewfinder, is that it is almost impossible to get a horizontal line if you are shooting straight on. Even with the built in level, trying to aim, and then level the bubble, without losing our composition, is tough. That and the slightest jiggle, like when you are pressing the shutter button, throws off your "balance". And then even when i think it is straight, it is still crooked on the negative. Since you don't really see what you are shooting in the finder like you would with an SLR, i can see the advantage to using a tripod and ground glass if you really want a level horizon or line. Plus, the hassy finder is not a tight fit. it wriggles, so you completely can't rely on what you see with your eye as being level.

The voightlander finder that phil uses may remedy this a bit.

Did some pictures for my sister for her online site. I'll sneak a couple of my faves up here so far. Still have a few rolls to process. Shot on Ektar with the SQ-A DIY processed.

I TOASTED the film. You can actually see some evidence of solarization in the sky. I was metering for the face and shooting almost directly into a setting sun. Camera settings were 1/125 @ 5.6/f4. Managed to get it to scan properly with little hassle.

Oddly enough this is the look I was going for. I'm really happy I could pull it off. Its great when you have an idea in your head and you can  translate it on to film.
