Jobo 2830 & 4x5 film
« on: March 22, 2013, 01:47:27 PM »
I am still really excited about the Harman Titan 8x10, but the price of the camera and the film holders is quite something! So I'm now considering the 4x5 as an alternative. In preparation I've already bought a Jobo 2830 paper development drum. I should work fine as it is with 8x10. But for 4x5 you apparently need to use the 4206 format holders to keep the paper in place. My drum didn't come with any so I'm asking myself if they are really necessary, if there's any DIY solution and most importantly how exactly they are used.

As I am in a  way responsible for your ownership of the jobo drum, I'd better chime in.. :)
I am not aware of any reasonable way to use the 4x5 film in these drums other then the 4206 Formathalter or a DIY copy (now, sitting at our kitchen table the thin plastic place-mat with some plastic pins to hold the film might be the option.
But there is another way - instead of Harman Titan build your own pinhole and build it in 13x18cm format. Plenty of holders on German Ebay very cheaply and you can make nice contact prints in this format.

Thanks Andrej. Good to know that the format holder is the only option. I've now found two reasonably priced 8x10 film holders. Maybe I'll just skip the Titan for now and go for a cheaper solution.

I am lusting very much after 8x10 (or rather, being an european, after 18x24cm which I find more pleasing and easier to compose within). However, when I saw the price tag for the Titan I though - heck - for that kind of money with a bit of luck I could get a perfectly decent old wooden camera - and that is my plan for next months - hunt for one.
But in your place, I would really consider the 13x18cm idea... If you just want to try I could maybe lend you a holder or two for a short time.

Thank you Andrej that's very kind of you! But it's too late already. Like I said, two 8x10 film holders are already on their way and I also bought a 8x10 pinhole camera (because I'm not that good at working with my hands and I also don't have the time).

Now that I've finally exposed my sheets of 18x24cm film I have another question. Apparently the drum was supposed to come with paper holders that are supposed to "slide onto the drum guide strips" (according to the manual). My drum didn't come with any of these and I'm wondering if they are necessary for 18x24 paper (two sheets at a time if possible). I assume they are there to keep the two sheets of paper from overlapping and messing up the development, right?

Hi Urban - can't answer your question precisely but this may help.

I also use an 8x10 print drum and have modified it as follows.

Firstly two white plastic ribs glued in place, opposite each other, that run from top to bottom.  This allows for either one 8x10 sheet to stay in place, (or Whole Plate which was what I was using) or two 5x7 sheets, or four 4x5 sheets.  The ribs were pillaged from the edges of some plastic electrical ducting and glued in with Araldite.

If loading 4x5, I load two to the bottom of the tank, sideways, and then insert this space cut from a plastic lid, though a CD would do fine if you can cut it safely.  This prevents any risk of the sheets sliding around and overlapping.

Then you can load the other two on top of the disk.

Incidentally the fine ribs you can see on the inside, (in black) are to help keep the back of the paper or film away from the drum surface - helps with clearing any anti-halation coating.  Does yours have these?

I have an electric roller and use about 250ml of liquid.  I could probably use less but that's easy to measure.  Works like a dream for 4x5 film, though I do adjust the chemistry a little - I add 25% plain water, (from 200ml to 250ml) and reduce dev time by 15% since it's a continuous rolling.

That might help.  Maybe.

The Jobo 2820 Test Drum is made for 4x5 paper, that's what I use for Harman DPP. It is said to only require 45ml of solution, though I use about 90ml to ensure adequate development, and none sloshes out. It will develop two sheets at a time, so it's very economical to use.

Thanks Sandeha. Yes, my tank has those ribs, too. A lot of small ones and four big ones. Two of the bigger ones are on opposite sites of the drum and are for 8x10 paper. And on one side there are two more. One to the left and one to the right of the one rib mentioned before. They are for metric (?) sized film. Which is what I'm using (18x24). And as I want to have the option to shoot 8x10 later on I need something reversible.

What I did would make Francois proud, I think ;) I just used an old Stabilo fineliner and cut it into 3cm long pieces and then length wise. The plastic of the pen has just the right thickness (the same as the ribs) and is strong enough to hold on (I hope), but flexible enough so that I can slide it onto the rib.

I'll try this week and we'll see if it works.

Thanks Volker. I had seen that. But as I only shoot paper negatives right now, I hope my method is good enough.

And "Fixing a Jobo 2830 with a Swiss Army knife and a fine liner" sounds like something that I definitely need to try ;)

And yes Urban, I'm proud of you  ;D

Now this gets me thinking about this unused cibachrome drum that I have...

To answer my own question: The paper fits exactly between the ribs and is held in place without any paper holders. In fact I had difficulties removing the paper afterwards.
