For those unfamiliar, Grays of Westminster is about THE most exclusive Nikon emporium I've ever visited. They specialise solely in Nikon and have a chap whose job it is to travel the world (mainly Japan, from what I can gather) to source the best, most sought after and most pristine examples of Nikon gear he can lay his hands on. This is the latest high profile addition:

Somehow, aside from the very first digital camera ever made, I just don't see any other attracting this sort of price tag.

Now then, Lara said she wanted to buy me something nice for my birthday next week..... ;) :o

Nice camera!

I wonder if the eventual buyer will enjoy actually using this beauty though...in the way I enjoy wrapping up my trusty 50GBP Canon AE-1 in a scarf and taking it everywhere?

Also, suddenly, ebuy doesn't seem so expensive for F1s ;)

its still a Nykon though I am sure people will have very fond emotional attatchments to it . I do think the price is way over the odds as it is not an innovative body or game changer!

For me, these are collectors pieces. I'm sure whoever buys it will run the odd roll through it ro prove it works but it will probably live on a shelf or in a cabinet somewhere.

As for this NOT being a game changer - this is one of the 100 pre-production models of the first big-time SLR that took 35mm photography into the popular era with professionals and amateurs alike. Although I currently use Nikon, I've also owned Canon, Leica, Minolta and Pentax SLRs down the years and I just don't see any other brand or model of SLR getting this sort of kudos.

when this Nikon came out there had already been many other SLR's in the market place for 8-9 years , Pentax, Praktica, Exakta, Miranda to name a few. Peoples general wealth in those years also started to improve as well as did the market for cameras and photography in general. Anyway camera dealers will always say theirs were first or more innovative . 'tis good for business.

How much of a Minolta fan that I am, a black SR-2 would be the holy grail for me.

As for the Nikon F, they added a pentaprism to it's S3 rangefinder and made a new lens mount that continues today some almost 55 years later. The F2 is some I would like to have, but it would just sit on a shelf. I don't collect cameras.

As for revolutionary, they just got the basics and did all those right. Unlike say a Canon, who likes to add as many features onto a camera, or say Minolta who had all the best features, but on 10 camera models. Auto XTL, that was so close, but the lens mount doomed it to failure.

This one camera, the Nikon F created to momentum for a massive system that has still yet to be rivaled by really anyone. So many special accessories were available for so many uses over the decades, it's mind boggling.

Still, it's just another Nikon F camera, you build it to what you need it to do. Then, it's special.

Welll... There is the Hubble...  Little tough to get it shipped, I think it is pick-up only.   ;)

In the meantime, I would settle for a Pentax 67.  Camera of my dreams...
