Who needs photo paper?
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:02:29 PM »
I just found this. The guy makes prints from just about anything you can get in a kitchen, bathroom, your own body...

Ha! Read this thinking you'd be giving away some photographic paper... ::) ;D Anyways... printing with sweat, pus and ear wax sounds a lot fun! :P

I gave up at the point of 'printed using the contents of found condoms'.

There are some things you just don't want to think about in the darkroom, and the discarded contents of another man's prophylactic that is one of them.

I feel a bit queasy now.

I know some of the stuff is pretty extreme... and I wonder about the longevity of the "pigments" used.
And it also brings a lot of concerns about the bio safety of making images using stuff like that. I guess you look pretty dumb if you have to get to the hospital because you got some odd disease because you made a print!

But still, just the fact that he manages to get images from stuff like that is a pretty impressive proof that you can get images out of pretty much anything and everything as long as you have the know how.

But for the queasiness, I can suggest a nice mint tea... you can make prints from the leftovers... or at the very least use it as some sort of dye.

Nice!

This idea is far from new. Andy Warhole used similar additives and he may well not have been the first. I can't say that I've researched the subject, but he's the earliest I can recall at the moment. There have been numerous artists since, including some very well-known names.

But this bloke does seem to be sincere, serious and successful, so good for him. As for the aesthetics, no, I personally wouldn't want (somebody else's) sperm hanging on my sitting room wall, but hey, it takes all sorts.

ps - I, too, was hoping for some free photo paper - great subject line.

You're probably referring to his pee paintings... lots of funny anecdotes about these... and their stench is supposed to be pretty other worldly.

Ok so there may be some sour grapes because the local large modern art gallery with 20 ft high white walls keeps rejecting my submissions...but...he seems to be filling big galleries with this type of stuff. There seems to be an anti-aesthetic going on in the art world. Which seems a shame as in the UK, most of these galleries are funded by taxation and lottery funding yet only seem to be appealing to 0.1% of the population.

Time for a Filmwasters show?

Ever since I started this thread, I've been wondering about one thing: how much "liquid" is required to do a 11x14?

Just thinking about this kinda hurts...
Lucky for the guinea pigs that he made only small-ish prints in this series.

Donkey Dave (nice name!) is right. For the last 10-20 years the 'art' market has been paying huge sums for this type of anti-aesthetic. When I show my humble offerings to curators etc, I get told that I need to have a message, or a political point to my work. So, ugly nude women rather than beautiful nude women - naff camera and production values as opposed to the Blad a leading printer making my print. But what about my aesthetic choices? Why am I wrong to want a beautiful woman, well photographed and printed properly? It seems to have worked quite well for the last 100+ years; why change now?

Any gallerist reading this want to risk their reputation by offering Filmwasters a show? Realistically priced prints which people would actually like to put on there sitting room wall? What a radical idea. They might even sell some pictures.

Filmwasters show?  Heres a collective statement:

The Filmwaster Movement explores the relationship between consumerist fetishism and recycling culture.

With influences as diverse as Blake and Roy Lichtenstein, new synergies are created from both opaque and transparent structures.

Ever since the movement was founded the artists have been fascinated by the unrelenting divergence of the mind. What starts out as hope soon becomes manipulated into a carnival of defeat, leaving only a sense of nihilism and the chance of a new order.

As spatial phenomena become undefined through frantic and academic practice, the viewer is left with an impression of the corners of our future.

That's top class artsy waffle, and I mean that with warmth and humour :)

Couldn't have been better by one of those 'random art statement generators ;)

LEA , I'd like to take the credit but it's just Arty Bollocks (.com)!!! ;)  Still it would be a laugh to put on a show with a made up statement.  A sort of post anti aesthetic!!

btw, despite some of the ingredients used here being rather unsavoury to say the least, I am still very interested in the process if anyone fancies explaining how it actually works? not much of an alternative process type photographer... yet... hoping to get the time and space to experiment with some more processes when I move onto my boat next month. (I know space and boat scarcely belong in the same sentence but tbh its more space than I currently have) + natural albeit gentle agitation of my chemicals :-P

anyway back on point. just saw '999 cranes' in books and projects section and can't stop laughing. this man either has a firm grasp of absurd humour or is genuinely one of these mislead arty types.

Here's a description of the salt print process
http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes/saltprints/a-dash-of-salt

As far as I know, the guy probably replaces the water with body fluids... gross but interesting.

So you're moving to a boat?
Is it one of those river boats that was used to carry bulk or something more modern?
