San Francisco Calling.....
« on: March 18, 2013, 12:29:30 PM »
Not quite the same ring to it as "London Calling" but....

I am planning a trip to San Fran in late May. I am travelling with another couple, my wife and my two kids. We are planning on taking the train down to Portland then driving the Oregon Coast down to San Fran. I am hoping to get in a bit of photo adventures in. Well as much as my travel partners will allow.

So far, I plan on getting some wet plate family portraits done at Photoboothsf. I also want to check out the MOMASF.

Any other suggestions would be great!

While in Portland, you have to go see Powell's city of books! It's one of the biggest bookstores you've ever seen!

Also, drop by Voodoo Donuts for a very unique snacking experience (they make donuts in the shape of voodoo dolls that you get to stab with toothpicks before you eat... I should add that they're filled with jam)

I'm envious!
My husband & I were there two years ago for a quick vacation and I want to to back- actually I didn't want to leave.

I highly recommend going to the Sutro Baths, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutro_Baths
There's plenty to explore and wander around, and there's no charge.

Fisherman's Wharf of course...lot's of color, people watching, fooderies, and just fun.  Don't miss the "Musee Mechanique".  It's packed with antique arcade games and mechanically operated musical instruments.  It's along the wharf. http://www.museemechanique.org/machines.html

Ghiradelli Square-http://www.ghirardellisq.com/
It's pretty cool at night or in the evening.

You'll get more responses and ideas, but these were my favs...

And be on the look-out for some mythbusters hanging around Treasure Island and the old abandoned Alameda naval base. Adam lives in the Mission district.
Don't forget to ride that little cable car :)

From memory, Steven lives there too.

Chris the coast between Portland and San Fran is probably my favourite place in the world, outside the UK. I could bore forever about it, if you haven't been, you have to visit The Avenue of the Giants, in my humble opinion one of the natural wonders of the world. http://avenueofthegiants.net/ Trees so big you can't quite get your head around it!  :o

In Portland, you might want to visit Blue Moon Camera.  They're way out in a suburb (long bus ride) but if you have a car should be easy to get to.  I've picked up some choice Bronica stuff there.

And the very talented Zeb Andrews works there too!

I was there for 3 days early last year (see the articles section for some pics), really enjoyed all of it, walking around the castro and mission area, we walked from fishermans wharf back all the way across the city to the market area where we were staying which was cool, up and down lots of hills past the curvy street etc.

cycled across the bridge to sausilito and got the ferry back, all very touristy but all great and lots to see just walking about.

enjoy!

One thing is be careful of the popular trams at popular times, queues can be an hour plus....

SFMOMA is shutting down from 2nd June 2013 for a couple of years of renovations. There's been no word of where their collection might be on display. Luckily the nearby private galleries at 49 Geary are worth checking out.

Oh, and there's Rayko Photo Center.
http://raykophotocenter.com/current-show-b

The current show is plastic cameras, and the next show is pinhole.
(I have photos in each one)

It's a neat place and right off the bus line.

Hey Chris--I'm going to a conference at Simon Fraser in June.  We should perhaps organize a few pints or a cup of some other beverage...

This is perfect!

I had forgot all about Rayko. That is going up to the top of the list. Looks like I will miss the Pinhole show by a day... Sad!

Blue Moon, will need to check that out!

Nigel- I had not seen this, but after showing my wife I think we may be stopping there for a day.

As for Portland, I buzzed through last summer on my way to a Coffee Roasting Retreat, and did quite a bit. Voodoo was on the list and didn't get there so will be for sure this time. That and a few of the best coffee shops/roasters on the west coast. Looking forward to it!

So far, I plan on getting some wet plate family portraits done at Photoboothsf.

close to photobooth.. for a good bite stop by El Farolito for a san francisco mission style burrito. I like the super chorizo burrito.. somethign different maybe try it with the lengua (beef tongue), cabeza (beef head) with sesos (beef brain) and ojo (beef eye)... veg choices are also available.

Not that I find any of those options stomach turning, but I am a vegetarian so I will check out the other options. I know what your thinking "left coast, tree hugging, hippy vegetarian" I am not.
