Royal Gold 400
« on: January 12, 2013, 01:36:22 PM »
I thought I would go to the zoo today and take a digital and film camera.  I found an old roll of Royal Gold 400 in the fridge and took it out to warm up.  I used to use RG 100 film a lot instead of the Gold 100 because I thought the colors were better.  There was not much a difference in cost either.  Did the new Ektar 100 replace Royal Gold?
Unfortunately a lot of the old films have been discontinued.  Especially bad was the loss of Kodachrome.
Anyone recommend a good color film.  I've used Portra 100 and 400 and was very satisfied.

Can't say for sure that Ektar replaced Royal Gold but I use it quite a lot and love it. Portra 400 is also becoming a favourite with quite a few photographers.
When people ask what equipment I use - I tell them my eyes.

I used to use Gold 200 a lot!

Now, I use Ektar and love it!
It's my goto film for color in all formats.

I had a bunch of royal gold 200, if I'd compare the colours to anything it'd be portra 160 but maybe it had some of the new ekars qualities too?
on a side note, I've shot a bit of the new portras now and I should really try out ektar more. seems like such a lovely film~ maybe when I'm out of velvia ;)

Late 1980's to mid-1990's came the Ektar 50 and Ektar 1000, followed by ektar 125 and old ektar 100. Royal gold replaced these in the mid 1990's with 100, 200, 400 and 1000 iso.

Mostly I use Portra 160 and 400 now. For sentimental reasons I have some Velvia 50 and Provia 400 in stock. Having been given a medium format projector, I want to shoot some 6 * 6 slides to try it out; but for most purposes the Portra is more forgiving and subtle.

I do however have several rolls of Gold 200 which cost about 16p a roll, slightly out of date, but haven't seen any results yet.
