Ailsa dragged Leon and I along to the awards bash in London last week. Being very much out of the loop, I had no idea what it was all about and only realised the evening related to a competition when I met Leon for a coffee beforehand. My first question was, "So did you enter then?" to which The Druid's reply was, "Yes I did, but I didn't hear back from anyone and I think my prints may have got lost in the post because I was just about to miss the deadline and had to call the office to get the address and I'm not sure I sent it to the right place." (or words to that effect).

Having located Ailsa, we arrived at the Leica gallery space a short while later and were greeted very warmly by Liz and her staff whereupon she told Leon that not only had his prints arrived safely, but he'd come 5th....out of over 6000 entries! Nice. The lad done good. It was fascinating seeing the look on his face as two opposing thoughts battled for supremecy:

  • Wow! I came 5th. I had no idea. That's amazing!
  • (Looking around critically at the prints on the walls) Hmmm, so how come these photographers placed higher than I did?
(Leon: correct me if any of this misrepresents you)

The icing on the cake was seeing Colin and his wife because we'd been told they weren't coming. It was a wonderful evening. Free booze all evening followed by an extended session in the pub with Colin, his wife, Leon and I catching up on this and that....if it hadn't been for my son waking me up at 5.45AM the next day it would have been a perfect night out. A totally unexpected pleasure that was well worth the hangover the next day.

Thanks to Ailsa for inviting us and for BWP for hosting such a great event.

Maybe less of the number  2 and more if the number 1 (at least before making good use of the free vino)

Thanks all. I was really happy to see Colin's work hanging on the walls there, and to recognise it as such before we even knew for sure that they were real Summerses. And there was also an amazing horse portrait that scored a well-deserved place. And a brilliant portfolio of silver-printed portraits in a nice Film's Not Dead portfolio box too.

There were also some industry bigwigs floating about ... A few Leica head-honchoes as well as Mr Documentary himself, Tom Stoddart (with his 'M' casually strung over his shoulder - natch).

The only negative was the following morning hangover ... Damn the free wine.

Yep, it was great to brush shoulders with Mr "f8 and be there" himself and also to meet Trevor Crone who is a lovely chap. I was halfway through a brief description of my standard shooting setup (Bronny with home made plastic lens and expired Pola film) before I realised that the man who had asked, "What type of photos do you take?" was in fact the main Leica guy in the UK. Blurry instants aren't high on his agenda and he looked a little aghast at my description!!

Leon's reply to the same question was far more composed and appropriate, "Mainly landscapes." Cool as a cucumber.

I usually order my copy direct from London but their site has been having some difficulties for several months with ordering, so this means I will have to wait til the middle of December to get my copy from Barnes & Noble..it really takes that long for them to get the current month...I need to just get a subscription...

Works fine on my nexus 7 and Nexus 10, Paul. Not sure what might stop yours working.  I'll see if I can find a source for the .apk file so you can download it directly.

The Google play store even has it listed as optimised for the N 7 ... Did you try to get it from the play store or elsewhere?

Thanks Leon, I'm going to have a shuftie later on at the solution you sent me. I actually tried to load it direct from the following link from the pulishers:

http://www.thegmcgroup.com/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=698

This takes you to iTunes (which has to be downloaded first) but the file isn't recognised and you hit a brick wall....!

Incidentally, I went for the Nexus 7 as the 10 version is a bit too big for me to carry around on the train. It looks excellent from what I've seen of it (got it Friday). I can even "tehther" it to my phone for the unlimited email access that the 3 network provides as part of the deal I got.

Paul - you wont be able to download from iTunes as it is an android tablet and not compatible with crApple apps.  You need to use the Google Play Store (small white bag shaped icon with a colourful triangle in the middle) which is on your N7 central homescreen dock, or one of the 3rd party Android app markets.

The Nexus 7 is a great little tablet, poor QC issues aside.

Your shrooms look great in the mag Leon. I'm a bit surprised Colin was runner up, I thought his shots were much better than the winners tbh, very moving and powerful. The winning shots are nice and they look like Ttv to me, but I thought Colin's were just in a different league.

Still, who wants a digi Leica anyway  8)

PS The portraits in the Films Not Dead portfolio must have been my friend Tori's winning shots of B&W printers I think.. she runs the Films Not Dead website http://www.filmsnotdead.com/

Con grats Leon.
How is that magazine holding up today? Is it ok, very good or maybe not so vry good?
I subscriped some years ago but felt quality declined after Ailsa left. I miss a good Photography mag these days so if it can be recomended Ill subscripe again.
Best regards

It's far from perfect (as if perfection ever exists....) but I feel it's as good as there is on this side of the pond. It's one of the very few that not only specialises in B&W but that also proactively promotes film photography.
