My diy 4x5 camera back. I used bass wood from hobby store to make this back. This wood is very easy to work with. What You need its just knife , ruler and fast dry glue. It took 5 hours to make this back.
Bellow my first shoots with my 4x5 inch camera with Danni as model as always. Shoot on ilford fb direct positive paper. Developed in multigrade developer 1:20. No name petzvel lens , 1300 watt continuous light , 1 sec exposure time.

Bass wood, otherwise called limewood or linden, is brilliant for small, fine designs and sculpture.  What you might call a semi-hard wood.

Thank You Everybody for very nice feedbacks. I am sorry for late answer but we are moving to our new flat at 17 dec ( finally settled in Scotland ) so I am in packing mood and don't have much time for nothing else.

Unfortunately  I don't have any plans just make this from head. After I move to new place I planing to make series of post on my blog how to build LF camera on cheap with-ought any special tools. Posts will cover making bellows , camera body , grounding glass etc.

For this back i have used bass wood which makes project a little more expensive. Next camera will be build from pine wood just covered with bass or oak wood. I found pine wood quite cheap in b&g . Its a little harder to cut with knife but still workable.

I have used rubber band on my back and its working very good.

Damian, I can quite follow your idea of working cheap with ordinary hand-tools, but if you have skills potential you could go upmarket rather than down.   Pine wood warps, and while it will 'do', other woods can be much more stable over time.  Basswood is great for prototypes but cherry is a dream to work with.

Or find a old busted wardrobe or chest of drawers made of genuine mahogany or oak and you'll be in good wood for ages.

I used pine for my 5x7 box camera- it's ok, but it is glued to a bit of MDF (it ain't pretty). I also used a similar rubber-band arrangement for the back. I'll dig it out and take some pictures of it...
