Hi all,

I am always on the search for new Photography related programming to watch... even watched "Fur, an imaginary potrait of Diane Arbus" .......... please don't watch it.

anyway I recently stumbled across this after watching "Close up: Photographers at work" on sky arts. seems interesting.

You beat me to it....

The "Close up: Photographers at work" programme on Sky Arts HD1 was very interesting, IMO and introduced me to a couple of photographers I hadn't heard of previously. Well worth the view if anyone can get access via the Sky website of if it's been posted on YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

Personally, I don't care much for Crewdson and his work. I saw a few interviews with him (first one was this http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4048567n) and simply never got it. He admits never having even touched a camera in his life. He hires big movie crews, has his own personal photographer to set-up the camera and take the shots when he says so (he doesn't even handle the cable release). Takes multiple shots on 8x10 that he has drum scanned and combined in Photoshop by his own assistant (he doesn't touch the computer).

And he has a BIG budget. For one of his shots he even bought a house to burn it down.

One thing he is really good at is asking the question of what makes a photographer?
If you make an image without ever touching any piece of equipment, is it still your photography? Are you even a photographer?

For all I care, he's a millionaire kid who has too much money and too many thumbs in his hands.

I would strongly recommend Julia Murat's film "Found Memories".  It's a fiction film and not a doc but photography (particularly pinhole) is absolutely critical to the story.  And it's a wonderful film!

He's bigger than a photographer. He's a visionary and an artist.....

Seriously, I don't "like" his work but the extremes to which the fella goes to create his tableaux has a smidgen of my respect.

It would be interesting, though to stick a camera in his hand and see what he could produce without the budget and the flunkies. I tend to feel the same about Annie Leibovitz. I'm sure she'd be a lot more capable but the last couple of films I've seen of her working showed her amongst what looked like a cast of thousands.....

yeah I do agree with you francois, this guy does have more money than sense (some of the shots don't even work that well, like the one in that episode of Close up was pretty average. It still does interested me however as I have always been interested in movies and LOVE behind the scenes of how they set up everything but rarely is it covered that extensively, so just hoping this will be a bit more of an in depth look.
