Opinions on development.
« on: October 01, 2012, 07:24:10 AM »
I recently bought an Olympus Pen-EE (2nd version with the dual shutter speeds). It's my first half frame camera and I'm pretty excited to use it.

UNFORTUNATELY...

The selenium meter is busted so I'm stuck with a 1/30 shutter. Not too bad.. Considering it's fixed focus and it opens up all the way to 3.5 I'm not too concerned.

My problem lies within the fact that I am currently broke and only have HP5 stocked. I plan on pulling it to EI 100 and use sunny 16 as a guideline.

So for development, should I just develop for 40% less? I've never had to pull film before so I'm a little confused on the timing. I'm currently using HC-110 using the recipe found here

http://www.jasonbrunner.com/hc110.html

Any advice would be appreciated.

http://people.goshen.edu/~marvinpb/zone.html - nice article about zone system and pull and push processing.

I am usually using hc-110 as developer with dulation h (1:63 ) , last time I used Jasson Bruner recipe and it works preaty good .

As You said You need to reduce time about 40 percent.

I wish it helps.

Or the other option is to simply stick a ND filter (lee color gel swatch book) or a dark red filter on the lens.

damian- thanks for the link. i have read a similar article, but doesn't the whole roll have to be shot in the same type of lighting conditions? in SF, the weather is bipolar and sometimes it can take a me a day or two to finish a roll so i've always avoided zone system.

francois- i unfortunately don't have one that fits onto the EE. i have to buy one but right now i need to pinch pennies.

I'd just shoot the film and not worry too much about the speed, then develop at somewhere around 200 and see what you've got. HP5+ is so forgiving, I bet you'll have a roll of useable shots - especially if you are to be scanning the negs ... all will be fine.

I think you've got a bigger issue in getting to the end of the roll. I gave up on my Canon Demi as I could never be arsed to wait for the 72nd shot before I developed the film. Drove me mad.

Dont panic Mr Mannering!

Same thing with my Pen EE. I think it took me a good six months to get through a roll of 48. I was starting to think the film wasn't engaged properly or something.
But one thing I must say, it's cheap to run!

But like Leon said, might as well rely on the film's latitude. It's the easiest thing to do.

yeah i do it well enough with my holga so i don't see how this would be any different am i right? even if i expose for 100 and develop for around 200 i'll just be a stop or so off so thats definitely fine for hp5. thanks guys!
