Any Olympus Trip users in here?
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:50:41 PM »
I think I got bitten by the Olympus bug... I'm thinking of getting the Trip 35 model.

As far as I know,  these are wonderful cameras with great lens able to produce excellent results...but I have one concern: Considering the camera won't have a sellenium meter working, how easy it would be to use on the very limited manual exposure setting?

Cheers...

Out of the two I had, only one had a non-working meter, so 50% chance of getting a dud. If you add the two perfectly working Pen EE-S2 I had, which are the Trip's little sisters, identical in every way except size, the ratio becomes 25%. :)

If the camera has been stored properly the meter will work, look for one with its original case, or a cap. Sometimes selenium cells are still alive but contacts get oxidized, and a little rubbing with an eraser is enough to revive them.

As for manual use, you can set aperture manually and the camera will use its slowest speed (1/40 I seem to remember, maybe 1/30), but there's a mod where you use a thin strip through a hole in the top to trigger the faster speed in manual. Look for it on Google.

I've had two, both with working meters. Don't use it much though so not really an expert, but the few rolls I have shot have been great. But I always seem to reach for tje more manual smena symbol first. Well I did until I somehow put a huge gouge across the lens.

My trip was £5 though, so don't feel too bad about not using it too much.

They have a big fan base and seem very versatile for a having in your pocket or car for quick shots.

Enjoy if you get one.

That was me  :) Unfortunately the blog got deleted, and one day I hope to have a few spare moments to rebuild it... but for now the good news is the article can be read on the internet archive:

http://web.archive.org/web/20080206181448/http://alspix.blog.co.uk/index.php/alspix/2006/02/12/

The mod lets you switch between 1/30 and 1/200

I have a trip which I broke trying to fix the selenium meter by opening the lens. Now I need to fix the infinity focus... a pain to do.

But having used the Pen EES-2, I find the Trip to be easier to handle, especially with the bigger focus ring.
As for the meter, you can always use the camera in "flash" mode which will give you aperture selection.

Thanks for the mod link... would that mod work on the Pen series as well ?

I also have a recently aqcuired Pen Francois... and although I haven't used yet, I can clearly see the aperture changing depending on the setting when is in flash mode ... does the Trip works exactly in the same way as the Pen?

i own one and if your meter does not work, simply use iso100 film and change the aperture according to sunny 16. the shutter is fixed at 1/40 if you use manual aperture. i find it very easy to use during the daytime under almost all conditions and once it gets slightly darker out i'll resort to underexposing by 1 stop then its time to use a different camera.

if the meter was functional, the trip wont let you shoot anything slower than 1/40 @f/2.8 anyways.

luckily my grandfather was a very wasteful man so he bought the trip and never used it. the meter works and everything but i have tried doing the manual way and it comes out fine.

does the Trip works exactly in the same way as the Pen?
Yes, they're both mechanically and design wise almost identical.
Depending on which model pf the Pen you're used to (some were fixed focus), they're the same. Even the body itself is quite similar. I wouldn't be surprised if the only differences were the film advance gear, lens barrel and viewfinder.

Since I had taken apart my trip, when I took apart the Pen to figure out why sometimes the film advance was jerky, I was very surprised to see how similar they are.

I thought about that as well but then if it's really sunny and bright,  I'm a bit concerned of getting overexposed pictures with such slow speed...

I'm glad to hear that Francois... I have the Pen EE2 model which I hadn't had the chance to use yet but it seems that the meter is in fully working condition.

I've been looking at the Pen EE recently - it sounds like something that would be even more of an ideal pocket snapper than the XA(n)s that I have at the moment. The high capacity means I'd be even less bothered about wasting film (obviously, something that doesn't bother me a lot given that I'm here, but I also like the portrait format too - my medium format stuff is mostly 6x4.5).

Are they good and reliable things?

I have two Trips and they both work.  For me the consistent  problem was the aperture blades sticking.  This is a fairly straight forward fix, especially if you're the kind of bloke who happily takes cameras apart.

Actually I've just bought one of the Pens on eBay - not even the EE, the original manual one - entirely by accident. No, in fact, it must have been hackers that made me buy it. Hackers made me click right at the last minute. Definitely. Hackers or viruses. So forget that.

I see... the hackers (possibly the same one as you mentioned..) made me buy the Trip today... a total accident!

I'd seen when I went there Sandeha... the price put me off a bit I have to say.  In fact, Photographer's gallery used to have some cool ones as well to sell... maybe they're the ones the always bid higher than me on ebay?  >:(

sapata- f/22 on a real sunny day with iso 100 film works out very well for me.. i normally have my lightmeter app on my iphone just to be sure but i usually just follow sunny 16. if its a little cloudy out i switch to f/16-f/11 depending on how cloudy, overcast/shady areas can go from f/11-f/8 depending how dark. indoors are always hard for me so thats when i normally whip out the iphone :)

the trip really is a great camera. the zone focusing is very forgiving and it usually earns me a compliment or two when i bring it around the city. i still think you should pick it up despite the meter being inoperative.

Yes.  I have one.  An Olympus Trip 35, bought in my local Red Cross shop for about £2 last year.  It's great, works perfectly and I get to feel like David Bailey.  In a skirt.
