Starting Off Young

My 4 year old son, Joe, suddenly started showing an interest in my Land Camera while we were on holiday last week. He grabbed it off me and trailed around for an hour with it hanging round his neck (i.e. dragging almost along the ground). He then decided he wanted to take a photo, so I focussed it for him and gave it to him to frame and click.....here's what he came up with. Nice and arty  :D

Nice one! Perhaps Joe shouold have his own profile ???

Instruct him in the ways of the administrator/moderator. Give it a few years and you'll be able to kick back with your pipe and slippers ;D

Funny, I was about the same age when I got my first Polaroid. I remember it was a hard-body model that took only the B&W film. I just loved using the little squeegee to stabilize the print :)

That's really cool! I'm all for people starting young. My younger sister is turning 13 this year, and I'm debating giving her a Canon AE-1 for her birthday...

This is great!!!

My son (who is about the same age) recently did the same. He wanted to take a photo of me, so I did the same and focused for him and let him shoot away. I was thinking of taking him out with my old Colorpack II.

Usually, if you tell them to align the some number with the arrow for group shots, they can learn it pretty fast and then focus by themselves :)

Or better yet, print the little logos from the Holga on sticky paper and stick them to the lens barrel...

Francois, at the moment he can only just press the shutter whilst holding some of the camera (I have to hold the rest). He's some way away from being able to move the focus sliders  :)

That's why you need to get him a rigid body like a Colorpack 2 ;)
Focus if done by lens rotation. The front is fairly smaller so he can press the button easy.
It's also very lightweight. Runs on AA's.

But still, just seeing him holding the camera makes me smile a lot :)


I went looking through the landlist and figured my first Polaroid probably was a Model 3000 "Big Swinger". I remember the rotating red shutter button...

My ten year old is doing the same with my Holga, but I like your approach because it offers instant gratification.

This 6 1/2 year old boy came to a workshop several weeks ago. He already has his own blog, and it's very funny to read the current post where he explains how he created the multiple exposure image he posted there and says at the end "it's easy".
