RESUMEs Anyone??
« on: February 27, 2007, 06:59:22 PM »
I am putting in an application for exhbition in ye old Raleigh, NC suburb of Cary and they are asking for the dreaded resume/exhibition history  :P  So, while I have gotten mine loosely polished, I thought I'd share and welcome others to do the same.  For me, seeing someone's resume is often eye-opening.  Personally, I have a long ways to go and at the same time, I have come decently far from where I was seven years ago.  I am totally top-heavy on local stuff and really want to add more out of state shows, a bigger solo show and hopefully a grant or two or three.  Plus, I am finishing up some minor photographic education, which I plan to add later.  Certainly wouldn't hurt for me to get published in some photography mags, publications, etc., either.  Hopefully, we can all learn from each other AND learn more about one another.  Please feel free to comment on what you'd leave out, beef up, etc.  Oh, and if nothing else, this post could provide the momentum to clean up your own photo-resume even if you never show it here  ;)

Ron, this looks like a fun thread and I wish I had something to contribute to it, but I'm not the resume type when it comes to photography and I haven't done a single show so even if I was, there wouldn't be much to write down on the page  :'( Boo hoo.

I agree with you that your resume is pretty heavy on 'the local stuff' and it does kind of leap out from the page, but then what are you going to do? Also, Merka is a big old country  :)

Ron,
I've never seen a "clients" portion listed on a fine art resume. You might want to consider cutting that?
Also, I'd put "In Print" and "Collections" before your speaking engagments. My experience is they are more interested in your work as a photographer than your work as a lecturer. Lastly, the words "In Print" seems awkard. It's usually clarified as "publications" or something along those lines.
But that's just my two cents....

Not sure if it helps, but my resume is here: http://www.susanburnstine.com/pubs.htm

Agree with Susan, and on mine I list the most recent first and go down from there. I cant post mine from this computer but I will try to do that later on. I had to turn that darned thing in three times last month, so far I did get into one show but I will have to wait and see about the other and a grant....scarily one is being jurored by Ann Wilkes Tucker, she is the curator for photography at the Museum of fine arts Houston. I dont expect to get in as I am sure they had thousands apply this year because people wanted her to see their work....fingers crossed :) Good luck to you!

Thx guys, this is exactly what I was hoping to get feedback on!  Susan, I have seen yours before and knew it was one to mimic  ;)  I will look again to get my stuff tighter.  Thanks for the tips - I just don't have the experience neither in number of years or in putting this kinda thing together and so this input is invaluable.  Laura, thx. I'd LOVE to see yours and good luck to you as well.  Ed, well, you just need to get your work out there - it's good stuff  :)

Something I do in all my CV's is I put the information in reverse date order. I figure prople will first want to know what you just did, not where you started...

I went looking in my bookmarks and found a site where they have (used to have??) the Resumés of many famous artists... might be inspiring! (or at least worth a look)
