If not totally apocryphal it might have been Menuhin or Perlman who, when a fan at a post-recital party said he must have a very expensive violin to get such fine tones, replied, "I do.  Now let's hear you play it."

I wonder if anyone ever complimented Michaelangelo on his brush collection, or his chisels?

This is probably a 19th / 20th century phenomenon started by the sort of nouveau riche Philistines who like owning / acquiring art but not taking the time to appreciate or understand it?
