German Carnival
« on: October 24, 2011, 04:54:18 PM »
Carnvial or better to say Karneval is something very important in the region of Germany where I live. It is sometimes called the fifth season. Karneval is the time before ash wednesday and reaches it's peak at the Rosenmontag (rose monday). At the Rosenmontag there is a big parade in every town of North-Rhine Westphalia. And this is what the pictures, I want to show you, are about.

Because the Rosenmontagszug (rose monday parade) is a very boozy event, you better get there by train.

As I said, everyone drinks during this parade, it's more like a big celebration of alcohol.

Some people are quite good at hiding their consume, some aren't...

...and if you aren't allowed to drink, you can feel quite lost.

And while some people have to have fun...

...others ignore the whole thing completly.

An important part of the Rosenmontagszug is giving away little presents to the crowd...

...but most of the presents aren't really wanted by the crowd.

Because it's a german tradition, everything has to be caught on tape.

The Germans really need carnival, how else could it be possible that the square germans use their own houses roof as a dancefloor?

But after all, carnival is also about family...

...and pretzels.

And when everything is over some need a break...

...and Germany turns into Germany again while the whole mess is cleaned up.

I hope you liked my first post on the filmwasters forum as much as I enjoyed taking these pictures.

Bastian.

Hi Bastian

Can you tell us a bit about your process when shooting - for the tech heads amongst us?  Camera type/ film type etc?

regards
L.

Yes, of course I can.

Camera was my trusty old Canon AV-1 with Canon FD 50mm 1.4 and FD 28 2.8

Film used was:
-Fomapan R100, a B/W reversal film, processed with the Foma Reversal Kit
-Tri-X rated at 200ASA, processed in D76 1+1.
-Kodak Portra 400VC

The whole lot was scanned with a Epson Perfection 4490.

As you can see everything was quite lo-fi.

Great little photo essay. Thanks for posting it. I grew up in Germany and have fond memories of standing on the street on Rosenmontag trying to catch as many sweets as possible. Thanks for making me go back to the 1970's :-)
