I'm Celebrating !
« on: August 09, 2011, 10:11:42 PM »
I just received 5 rolls of 120 Kodak Aerochrome

I have always wanted to shoot Colour Infrared Film and now is my chance...

at a price including shipping they cost €100  :o the guy I got them from
has it in bulk and of course a monopoly.

I remember a few articles in Practical Photography sometime in the 80's
about Colour Infrared, I just loved the colour effect kind of like the
aftermath of Nuclear War.

Anyway, has anyone used this film before?

Congrats!
I'm eager to hear how it works out for you, as I've been wanting to give that stuff a try myself...

Okay, you go first!

Thanks astrobeck,

Yea im buzzin to try the first roll, the only thing is
im gonna have to cross process it in C-41 with my local lab.

I hope there are no negative issues [pardon the pun] regarding
the chemicals.

Make sure you read Up before you use it. Pretty sure the results depend on the filter you are using. I have a couple rolls of 35mm that I haven't used yet.

yea thanks Sean, the seller included some filter/processing advice.

A filter must really be used, yellow or orange. red can be used with a less
desirable effect.

What a downer -

It turned out to be a lovely day yesterday so I decided to shoot the first roll of Colour Infrared.

I took some lovely images with great potential I felt like I was on a roll.
I developed the 2 remaining 120 colour films and then cross processed the infrared in C-41.

It took me 40 minutes to get the film on the spiral  :'( but the film only wound onto itself
on the inside of the first turn of the spiral instead of winding towards the centre so not all
the frames got developed. It transpired that the film is 59.5mm wide instead of the 61mm
standard and that 1.5mm's makes a big difference i can tell you.

anyway the results are a kind of cold duotone  :'( i used a wrattan #8 yellow filter so I probably
need to use a deeper yellow or orange and process in E6 eventhough the film is not a true E6 film.

Anyway here is the best and worst of the bunch.

I am in contact with the seller who loads this from bulk and he is very helpful
so I will relay his thoughts.

Hi Alan, sorry to hear about your mishap with the processing. Bummer indeed.

I used some sort of colour IR film a few years ago when i got back into film photography and was running around like a dog in heat trying every format and film type under the sun. I had a great time shooting it and will try and dig up some examples. I used a Smena 8M (crappy 35mm Soviet camera) and I think I taped a sweet wrapper over the front...something from a box of Quality Street if I remember correctly; yellow or orange.

** 20 minutes later **

Hurrah! Found them on an old backup disk from 2003. Looking through the contact sheet scans I it would seem that I never got past the 'testing the film' stage with this stuff; I shot one roll to see how things came out and then didn't take it further. My usual test shots of the time are all over the roll (the war memorial at Euston and my local Underground station along with some inevitable Cornwall shots...cows and lots of red grass). I obviously got a kick out of the fact that colour IR turns green stuff red  :D I still have one roll left I think. I got them processed at Metro Imaging.

yea that cow shot is great - love that effect.

There are some nice images on the flickr group also >
http://www.flickr.com/groups/colorinfrared/

Mojave - the film has been discontinued for a few years now but the
source I have for it has bulk rolls.

Kodak and Konica had colour Infrared films!

As mentioned above the supplier recons the standard #8 filter is sufficient
with the film but the processing is the problem with the lack of IR'ness.

As regards the width as mentioned he works in total darkness cutting and
rolling the film so I suppose for a hand finished film its not too bad, I couldnt
even begin to imagine how he lines up the film and get it straight on the backing paper?

anyway i think im gonna have to modify a plastic reel to take the slightly harrower
film ?

Alan: It's a real bummer that things didn't pan out for you on this one... But look at it on the good side, you now know the film is pretty much open game for even more experimenting... like doing negative film acceleration...

Ed: I know what you mean when you say you were experimenting and not pursuing any real technique... I still do the same after all these years :)
Also, I'd just love to get a rug the same color as that infrared grass!
