Summertime and LeRoy Grannis
« on: July 17, 2011, 03:26:22 PM »
I know few know who LeRoy Grannis is.
Well, to put it simply, he's the inventor of Surf photography!
In the 60's, he used to work with amphibious cameras to grab shots of California surfers in the water.
It's even been said that he was so good at it that he could change a roll of 35mm in his camera while sitting on his surfboard! All that without dropping anything to the bottom of the ocean...
At the end of the day, many surfers would come with him to his lab to see the pictures get developed. His trash bin was also raided for test prints and other things...

And oh, yeah... his pictures are simply amazing.

Crakin link. Thanks. Must get out and but a 20mm wet-suit and get in with the surfers here. Would a Graflex in a plastic bag be OK? :-)

Superb link and really impressive photography. I love the sea and wish I could surf....

Incidentally, does anyone on FW do any underwater photography? Mrs LD and I are PADI open water qualified and we shoot digi underwater - hence the reason I haven't posted any here. However, a friend is loaning me a Nikonos V rig to have a play with - and I might just take it to Thailand with us in November. I doubt we'll do any scuba while we're out there but the masks and snorkels are coming with us, so there's an opportunity to rattle off a few rolls.

I have one of his books, really amazing stuff.

If you like surf pics, worth checking out Ron Stoner too, for an interesting story to go along with the pictures.

Can't find a website for him, but you can find his books in the usual places.
