Another Bronica film back question
« on: July 03, 2011, 04:59:36 AM »
Hello all. Shot my first roll of Lucky brand 120 black and white film in my new Bronica ETRSi and ran into a problem that I didnt realize I had until I developed the film.

I didnt really know how many shots I'd get out of a standard roll of 120 film. I thought maybe less than 12. But now that I see how the image is orientated on the film, I realize I will get many more shots than 12.

Anyway, the problem is that the film stopped advancing at 11 shots. I just thought that was the end of the roll but now I see that I could have gotten maybe another 5 shots. Talk about wasting film!

So, does anybody have any ideas on why the film stopped advancing? I pressed the shutter, grabbed the handle to wind the film and it only went half way around and stopped. The camera hadnt slipped into double exposure mode. Im stumped. Any help would be very greatly appreciated!

On the upside, the shots I got look great as far as quality and exposure go. I love this camera!!! And I think Im going to like Lucky film.

You get 15 exposures on 120 film.

Once the 15th exposure has been taken, normally the film will wind on continuosly, so all the film is on the one spool.

When you unloaded the film from the back, was it all on the one spool?

The exposure window willl not advance without film on it and I wonder if you had loaded it correctly.
Was your last exposure in the film?

I have a manual for the Etrs which shows how to the film and would be willing to scan it for you if you wish.

Regards

Mike

Thank you so much HF!!! I might take you up on that. I watched a video on how to load the film because a reviewer on eBay said he loaded the film wrong and he suggested finding a video to show how its done, so I did. I loaded the film with the full roll on the right, and upside down, with the winding knob on the lower left corner so the empty, take up spool is on the left above the knob. The film comes out underneath the full spool, wraps around outside the case, and finally comes up and under the take up spool. Hope that makes sense.

I got 10 good pix and when I went to wind it up, it wound only half way and stopped and wouldnt go any further. I just thought it was done. I figured it should have finished and just wound all the way up on the empty spool, just like it does when shooting with a Holga, but it didnt. So there was film on both spools when I opened up the back, which I did in a dark bag just to be on the safe side.  :) So I think its loaded right but I dont know for sure so maybe seeing that manual would be a very good thing.  ;D

Here is one of the shots from the roll. I used a Holga close up lens over the Bronica lens. Funny, those Holga lenses fit right into the Bronica lens, like they were made for it.

Lovely picture.

Manual sent to your email account.

If you've saved the backing paper from the roll already developed, why don't you rewind this onto a spool and run this dry through the film back and see how this behaves.

I just through a test roll of film I keep on hand for just such emergencies and it worked fine. There was a weird sort of 'feeling' in the winding at the 11th frame but it kept going. This was with the same film back I had the problem with originally. So I tried another film back and no weird feeling at all. So, maybe there is something up with the film back and maybe the Lucky film wasnt so lucky in that back.  ;D

And the film backs are different. One has a dark slide with gray plastic and the other has black plastic. And the frame numbers advance in opposite directions on each. Cant find model numbers though.

Thank you so much for sending the manual!!! Its going to be a huge help!

I too have two backs, one with a grey edged dark slide and one with a black edged dark slide.

The back edged dark slide is from an ETRS back and can be removed from the back when off the camera.  The wind on the back is a knurled knob.

The grey edged dark slide is from an ETRSi back and the dark slide cannot be removed from the back when it is off the camera.  The wind on this back is a crank.

So I would suggest that you have one of each of these as well.

Maybe the ETRSi backs are broken. I can remove the slides when they arent on the camera. I have 3 of them, two 120's and 1 220 and they all let me remove the slide when they arent on the camera. Maybe that is why I got these deal so cheap. I got the camera, 4 backs, 60 rolls of a mixture of 120 and 220 film, a prism viewer and waist viewer and a cool leather bag for 350.

The ETRSi back has a little metal tag (ringed in photo).  This appears to be the interlock that stops the dark slide coming out of the back.

The ETRS back doesn't have it.  (2nd photo)

I suspect yours may just be the older backs.

HA! None of my backs have that little tab. I guess the slides are from other backs but Im also guessing that doesnt matter since the slides themselves seem to all be the same. Its the backs that are different?

Well the new dark slides are slightly different as well.

They have a notch (see photo) in them whereas the old slides don't.  Although both slides will fit will fit either back, at least with my backs.

One of the dark slides has this notch but the others dont.

Thank you again HF, so much, for your help on this.
