A MUST READ article about the smearing of Jay Maisel
« on: July 04, 2011, 01:15:20 PM »
If you've heard about this story, or even if you haven't, you have to read about how this fraudulent jerk has been targeting Jay Maisel:

http://www.jeremynicholl.com/blog/2011/07/04/how-stockbroker-andrew-peterson-aka-thomas-hawk-smeared-photographer-jay-maisel-in-andy-baio-copyright-row/comment-page-1/#comment-1648

At the bottom of the article is contact info for the jerk's employer. I've written them and hope other photographers will as well.

I think that guy has hanged himself. I like how the author of the article ends the article with the employers info. Im sure it wont be long before he is fired.

He should be fired. Someone that dishonest is more than likely ripping off clients and/or the company as well.

Assuming the circumstances and sequence of events are as described (and I've no reason to doubt they are) it would be wonderful if such a cyber-bully could be dealt with severely as a result of trying to trash an eminent photographer's body of work and reputation - and then send thugs to his house to intimidate him into the bargain.

All of that said, no-one should be allowed to get away with copying and re-using anyone else's work (of any description) whether the creator is amateur or professional, rich or poor, famous or unheard of.

For some reason, the fact that technology allows (maybe even encourages) people to misappropriate images or passages of text seems to be sufficient rationale for doing so. My suspicion is that the crime is relatively anonymous in most cases. Whe found out, however, the thief starts to cry "oppression" from the original artist and there's always someone, maybe many hundreds or thousands, who'll side with the thief as if he/she's some latter-day Robin Hood who's "freed" the work from the grips of the tyrranical owner / originator.

I'd actually pay money to see "Hawk" chastised in person, in public. Mind you, I just have "thing" about cheats and thieves.

I just clicked on one of the links that someone posted in the comment section of the article, supposedly showing Flickr photographers having a show in Los Angeles, and in the background, hanging on the wall is a Vicky Slater photograph. Check it out:

http://blog.flickr.net/en/2010/05/07/show-time/

If Vicky was not aware of this, that picture was stolen.

Well, the truth of the Vicky part probably isn't quite as dramatic. The photo you're talking about is this one:

Untitled by sweet distin, on Flickr

And if you look at the discussion underneath it on the Flickr page you'll see the invitation to participate in the show: http://www.flickr.com/photos/janeway/4478147235/# Doesn't mean Vicky didn't decline to be involved and then had her image used anyway, but it looks like this is all above board.

Hello :) Sorry I've been a bit quiet lately...just concentrating on kids and trying to eat less and exercise more..realized it's a big birthday next year and I want to feel better for it. But I'm hoping to get back to taking pictures properly very soon.

And no, they didn't steal it. I was invited to put a picture in so I did :)

I haven't read the article yet but I recognized one of the names mentioned and can imagine .....

Anyway hope to be back soon,

Vicky
