Wim Wenders Exhibition [London]
« on: May 07, 2011, 05:31:41 PM »
Places, strange and quiet

If anyone is interested I've just seen his photographic work at the Haunch of Venison off Bond Street and it was excellent...

I know his cinematography work such as the Buena Vista Social Club so thought I'd give a shot [FOC]...

Some near thirteen foot C prints in glorious vivid colour, black and whites and even a couple of pola's...

Anyway, it ends on the 14th so make the effort especially as the Haunch is a great space...

He has a creative eye!  I'm still so enamored with his Wings of Desire. It's just full of hypnotic cinematic majesty!!

Yeah, I think he needed Robby Muller's eye...

But CR is still in print!  I used to have a shelf full of them--never threw one out.

It looks great, Miller. Not sure if I have enough time to get up, but, I'm sure gonna try.

They certainly have a quiet and ordinary serenity about them.  Remind me of a certain Mr Bebbington's pictures actually. I'll see if I can pop over there this week.

Make the effort as his work and vision does not grace our shores often and as we say down here, "this is right up your alley guv'nor".

To be honest the pics that are doing the rounds to promote are not even on the same plain as what is on show... There is one pic of some youths playing football in a landscape that is just mind blowing.

The murals found in a tunnel in Brazil are unbelievable... This is worldwide urban-ex' with an international I have the fat a55 budget to do it feel...

The lowest point was that the book to accompany is just too damn small... Should have been A3 minimum...

For me within this genre, this is the Evander 'Real Deal' Holyfield...
If only I could go back a decade and see In The Mood For Love on the big screen as I would have watched it a dozen times... Damn its free and I'm back on Saturday... The Haunch was surreal quiet and the perfect setting. I left and walked past the maddening hordes in the Apple store and I realised the general population are beyond help and redemption.

I'm with you on the "maddening hordes in the Apple store", Miller. They've opened a new store in Covent garden and that is equally bonkers. My wife has an iMac, an IPhone and wanted an iPad until I persuaded her than a "Kindle" is a far better (and cheaper, smaller and lighter) alternative when it comes to reading books on our daily commute.

Unusually, for me, I'm a bit ambivalent about the photos on the link. I always associate Wim Wenders will movies not stills and I tend to agree with "Ryan" on the link / blog when he says these are soulless. I actually prefer Phil Bebbington's shots many times over. That said, I suspect the Wenders prints will look better / more impressive 13 foot high. As I work in te City, I'll try to get across to the Haunch later this week.

Thanks for the heads-up.

LD

But it's the 'whole' that makes this wonderful for me... Abstract locations (the shot with a wild dog on the roof of a car) size of prints and the setting to view... Just glad he bothered to let the world see his stills free of charge...
