help > artists using appropriated images(photographs)
« on: April 28, 2011, 12:26:27 PM »
I am currently thinking of a project involving approrpiated images(photographs) to form a narrative/ meaning.

I am having difficulty finding artists/ photographers appropriating images to creat their work - so far i have come across john baldessari, richard prince, robert longo, victor burgin, john stezaker, barbara kruger, etc. I am very interested in how the first three artists combine images together to form a meaning. Collage has also influenced my pratice/ thinking for this project. If you know any other artists working in thie way please let me know.

I am interested in how images have specific signs/ meanings(ie skulls=death, books=intelligence, etc). Theory of semiotics also come into play here.

Thanks.

Didn't Richard Prince just lose a copyright infringement lawsuit?

You've got him on your list already, but Richard Prince's The Cowboy, was at one time, the world's most expensive print? Seems an OK gig to me.

USD4 million or something? Skj.

Look at Sherrie Levine - she photographed other famous photographer's work (Walker Evans, Edward Weston), printed them and put them in a gallery as her own work. Also Joachim Schmid and Tacita Dean might be of interest
