The man, so eloquently described as a seven foot bald Leica ninja, is dropping his dressing gown of invisibility for one day....

Em... I saw this too.  I'll be in Derby at Format for the two days before and so won't have the delight of seeing him perform his rare dressing gown tricks in the UK!  Anyone else attending over that opening weekend?

Hi Matt,

A "7' tall street photographer" who's been at it for 50 years. What's he disguised himself as for all these years? A lamp post? This guy must be good.

Mrs LD and I will be there.

We're also off to the "Focus on Imaging" show at the NEC the following day. Anyone else going? I know it'll be mostly digital but it doesn't harm seeing what's happening on the "dork side".

Somehow, when I saw the title of this post, I couldn't stop thinking about a MAD magazine cartoon they named "Life's better with Ninjas" :)

I'd really like to go to this, if I'm thinking of the same guy he was on The Genius of Photography?

Unfortunately I've got something on the Saturday so I just don't know if I can face a long drive just for one day.  :-\

Well, Mrs LD and I attended. 300+ people there (a full house) and a great talk from the big fella. (It was also his 73rd birthday on the day of his talk - so we all sang "Happy Birthday" to him. No, really....) Matt Taylor was due to attend but was unavoidably detained. Hope you're feeling better Mr T.

The talk was filmed. Not sure by whom - but as there are other live performances by Joel on You Tube, that might be a good place to look. However, I had a notepad with me and wrote down as many of his pearls of wisdom as I could. If anyone's interested, I'll post a few......

He's also quite happy with d*g*t*l. He said he doesn't really fuss over the medium he uses so long as it is good enough. He said until recently d*g*t*l hadn't been good enough but he's now got an M9 and likes the results. I was a bit surprised by this, though I'm not sure why. I suppose I'd expected him to be a film traditionalist to the exclusion of all else.

Anyway, it was a great way to spend a Sunday morning.

I was there on the Saturday and Sunday, but not for JM's talk on Sunday. Glad it was enjoyable.  He's nowhere near 7' though - he held a door open for me (didn't recognise me for some reason...) and he's a good 2-3 inches shorter than I am (6'3").  Takes very interesting photos though.  Sky Arts HD have been doing a feature on the festival so the video footage may be with them.

There's a further conference bookending the end of the festival, sponsored by foto8 magazine which includes talks/seminars by Mitch Power and Polly Braden, and her photos were, for me, a real stand out in the exhibitions at Format.  Coll

Note sure how I managed to post the last message while typing mid sentence - who says men can't multi task eh ;)

The Foto8 conference is priced a lot steeply but the first weekend of the festival was so good, I'm sorely tempted.
