interesting camera (old news maybe, but new to me)
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:20:44 AM »
not that I need yet another camera, but this is a very interesting looking camera. A 4x5 in a polaroid pack film body with interchangeable lens capabilities. Nice mod...

it focuses like any polaroid pack film camera. just a left/right movement on the struts.

I wonder if I shouldn't do that to the old folder I have?

you should F - make it into the next Contraption.  I'm still planning my Devere cold light tube to multi LED light source conversion .... your contraptions spur me on :)

you would think they would have used a camera in better cosmetic condition for their sample. Metal body without a Zeiss finder - I'm curious to know which model they used. Will have to look through my polaroid book. Hopefully they didn't break apart a 195 to get the same optics just to bump it up to a 4x5...

Well, you just had to ask for it :)
I've just begun the fist part of what is almost sure to be a monster  ;D

If it works like I think it will, you're sure there will be another installment of the Contraptions series!

(besides, the forum is a tad too quiet for my taste these days...)

I just wrote Chamonix about the availability of the Sabre.  Anyone aware of anyone else modifying standard pack film Polaroids for 4x5?  I'd like to consider all options.  I'm not keen on the 110 mod. As beautiful as the 110 mods are, I'm interested in the lightweight packfilm conversions....

The Sabre looks like a great option as 665 becomes increasingly hard to find, more and more expensive, and of unreliable quality....

found a finished model of the sabre on a popular photo sharing site (the flash not a stock part, thankfully) and heard back from Chamonix - they can do it using my Nikkor-W 150/5.6.  Someone cancelled and fell of the list so I can get in on the 2nd run. Won't be able to get it until late June/early July.  That's a long wait when you have an itch for a camera !!

neat idea...handle doesn't look particularly comfortable, though.

the flash grip handle?  that's not included. the body doesn't really have any grip per se, unlike the standard pack film cameras, just the brushed aluminum casing which is OK by me. I can customize that to my preference.

The main drawback of the camera is it takes specifically modified 4x5 holders or grafmatic holders only. No of the shelf polaroid sheet film or 405 pack film holders fit.  But I have a few grafmatic holders kicking around...

I've been waiting about 7 months for mine. I should receive it in at the end of April 2011.  You can use polaroid 550 and 405 holders with this camera.  If you can router a clean groove across  the sides of the holder you can use regular film holders.  The chamonix holders are beautiful from what I've heard so I've ordered 5 and had a hot shoe added to use my wireless remotes.

no the handle on the other side that just looks like cut aluminum.

if it takes grafmatic backs, them it should take a 545 pola back...
