"Film Only" Magazines
« on: March 01, 2011, 01:48:39 PM »
A trip to any high street newsagent will provide a massive array of photography-based magazines. However, most are dedicated solely to "digital". Even those that don't discriminate:

- Black and White (UK)
- Outdoor Photography (UK)
- Practical Photography
- Photography Monthly
- Amateur Photographer

seem to include less and less film content - whether it's reproductions of photos taken on film, "how to" articles or just pure editorial. This isn't a criticism as I use both film and digital and many of the magazines are very good.

However, I was wondering if there are there any pure "film only" magazines these days?? If so, are they available from retailers or on-line only?

I think most are online.  I can only think of two off the top of my head, but I'd bet there are more.

Films and Grains is a new mag, just published it's first issue and is available online.

Then there is Lightleaks, a toy camera magazine, you can subscribe at their website.

Probably not what you are looking for, but there's the fabulous Camera Magazine from Japan.

http://www.amazon.co.jp/CAMERA-magazine-%E3%82%AB%E3%83%A1%E3%83%A9%E3%83%9E%E3%82%AC%E3%82%B8%E3%83%B3-%E3%82%A8%E3%82%A4%E3%83%A0%E3%83%83%E3%82%AF-2111/dp/4777918297/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298987741&sr=1-1

The photography galleries are excellent and they test out every M mount new lens or toy camera that comes out.

The problem is that, even if it's only released a few times a year, there's not a lot of new content so they end up recycling articles and sometimes it looks like a Rollei/Leica/Hassy fetish magazine.

Isn't Silvershotz purely analogue? Actually,  I just looked, it's not, but the few copies I have are mostly film-based work.

I used to get articles accepted regularly in Black and White Photography, but not anymore.  Not that I'm coming up with any new stuff these days that warrants articles, and to be honest, studying to be a solicitor as MORE than enough to be getting on with right now, but it is sad that the analogue content in B&W P is not as consistent as it used to be. I think my last Printers Art piece was published over a year ago now.

I would LOVE to have a film only paper magazine to buy, but I do see the point that the market just will not support such a thing unless it is paid for through high subscription rates.

If anyone wants to set one up, I'd be well up for being involved though.

Actually, the only way I can see that would make this possible is through a print on demand service...

I recently started to buy "aperture" magazine, if not entirely I would say it's almost only film photography. It's quarterly and mostly about photographers works and projects. I like it very much. Luckily is quarterly because here in the PHilippines becomes quite expensive!

Thanks for the heads-up folks, I'll check these out. "Aperture" and "Films and Grains" sound most promising as I'm not really a "toy" camera fan - yet.  As per Leon, I'd love to have a hand in publishing one as it'd be huge fun - but I suspect the cost would be prohibitive.

There's also "le négatif", but that's web only: http://ivitopp.com/negatif/ . But it is as the name suggests film only.

Print on demand seems to be the only way forward for a hard copy film only magazine these days.

I like the look of Films and Grains, what's the quality of the printing like?

At least the postage is not too bad to the UK which is often the real killer for UK subscribers to US magazines. However, it's still 10 pounds a copy which is up into Ag territory.

For those interested in Polaroid photography, this issue of Le Negatif is all about the art of instant. I got a shout out and so did Sean I’ve noted.

@Leon

Silvershotz were at "Focus" again this year. I asked the chap manning their stand whether their magazine attracts images from digital as well as film.

His response? He said "Oh yes, we've evolved, we take digital submissions as well as film these days". I suggested that he should use the term "adapted" rather than "evolved". As much as I enjoy using digital cameras, I really don't regard them as a step up the evolutionary ladder from film. Just different.

Agree with Urban & Miller, Le Negatif (http://ivitopp.com/negatif/) is one of my faves. the interface allows you to flip the pages like looking at a "real" magazine - I think the interface allows you to print as well. I could probably enjoy it more if I had a 27" display rather than on my laptop.

Good thread, people. I'll probably merge it with the similar one on the 'Resources' board at some point soon, but will leave it here for a while longer.

Great to see Sean and Miller getting some page-time from Le Negatif. I enjoyed looking through it, so thanks for the recommendation. I can't however, let this bit lie without comment (and please ignore me if you think I'm sounding like a broken record here):

“We love Polaroid, and we feel that the Impossible Project is the only one experimenting and spreading this medium with dignity and sincerity. We think that there is a bright and colorful future for instant photography, and we can’t wait to shoot some more!”

Aaaargh!! I'm going outside to howl at the moon and break something......
