Anyone still doing MF Slides.....??
« on: January 14, 2011, 01:21:57 PM »
I just got my hands on a very nice, old, British (I think) 6x6 projector as I've fancied getting back into slides in a bigger way - both numerically and by film size - for some time. I can't remember the make but it's one of those big old contraptions that don't have slide trays - just a "push-me, pull-you" sort of affair so you have to be loading and unloading as you go...

Anyway, as a landscpaist, I was wondering if anyone had advice to offer viz the best film stock for fine grain, fairly "neutral" colour slides. From memory, Ektachrome tends to be a bit "blue" and Velvia has a tendency towards high contrast and blues and greens.

Suggestions / examples would be very welcome, please. Thank you....

In recent years I have been a big fan of  Fuji Provia 100F. It is also great for long exposures as it no reciprocity failure until well over 2 minutes. My number one choice for the last 10 years.

Echo what Phil says.

The color is great but not over the top or uber saturated..

I have an old med format slide projector too.  It looks like a space ace ray gun!   :)

Thanks Phil and Becky - really appreciate your guidance.

That certainly looks like the sort of stuff I'm after. I see it says that you can get it in 220 as well as 120 (which would be very useful as I now have a 220 back for the Hassy as well as the 120).

I will still use Velvia occasionally - especially when the Bluebells are out - as it gives such a nice effect. However, having something neutral means I have the option to push the colour / contrast sliders if I want to but not if I don't. I find there's something quite reassuring about a neutral colour palette.

yeah, the 220 is what I use.
I like having a long roll out in the field when I shoot sometimes.  Especially in dusty desert places like I go to and don't want to open the camera so much.

Let us know how you get on with it.   :)
I think you'll really like it.

This is a timely post because I was just looking at Bronica 220 film backs on evilBay and wondering why they were so cheap compared to the 120 backs....got me wondering how much life there was in 220 as a format. Glad to hear some of you are still going strong with it  :)

If I get time to process any C41 (as planned since the start of December)...and if it works out....and if I buy a 220 back for my Bronny...then I may start shooting 220 neg film instead of 120 as long as I can find a non-outrageously expensive stock somewhere.

They do still make C41 220, right?

Ed- You'll probably like Fuji Pro 160S then.
It's smooth like silk, and nice color.  About 7.50 a roll in the US.  Lovely stuff.

My projector is an "Inox-Eclair" which, after a brief search on Google, only seems to produce results in French. Therefore, my initial belief that the projector might have been British appears to have been incorrect.

LD: Eclair used to be one of the principal manufacturers of pro movie cameras.  They were Paris-based, but at one time they either moved or were bought out and some of their manufacturing happened in Britain.  (Apparently the British-made Eclair cameras had motor problems or some such thing that made the French-made versions more desirable.) If they're the folks who made the slide projector you have, you may be right in thinking that it was made in the UK.

Thanks for the info Terry. I can't see any "made in....." sticker but the lens is a 127mm "Benoist-Berthiot INOX PARIS" so that might suggest it's French - unless, of course, they just sourced the lens from France?

It's got a 2-stage "on" switch. The first level gets the bulb "warm" and then after a couple of minutes you hit the "full" button and it lights up properly. Apparently, that stops the bulbs from burning out so quickly. I was given a spare bulb (Atlas A1/7 240c 500w Med Prefocus P28/25) which I need to look after as I was told they might be difficult to obtain.

Anyway, I'm going to get some Provia 120 (or 220 if I can get it) and see what the results look like when viewed as intended.

Fuji Provia is also my favorite chrome film. I find it good for both people and places. The shadows aren't too harsh and it does great skin tones, and just great, accurate color.

Speaking of MF slides...A friend gave me ten rolls Ektachrome EPR 120 (exp date 3/09) that have been in my fridge over a year.  Anybody want 'em?
