Oh Dear.....It's New Year Resolution Time......!!!
« on: December 28, 2010, 06:52:18 AM »
A short story.

The camera club to which I belonged (briefly) this year, has won the DSLR User Magazine "Battle of the Clubs" UK-wide competition. With the win comes a prize of £3,000 of Canon digital gear. (I can claim no part of the glory as none of my efforts were included as entries for any of the monthly judged "rounds".)

Having won the prize, the members are debating what should be chosen from the Canon catalogue by the club. A top-notch Canon printer was ruled out on the basis that very few, if any, of the members print anything - ever. This is because all club competitions are projected images taken with digital cameras. Sadly, this seems increasingly to be the way the photographic world is headed.

Here's the thing......with the internet and advent of hybrid processing which, by definition, forces us to digitise an analogue "original", it's very easy to see how we get into the habit of not printing.

My "photographic" resolution for 2011 is to have a lot more of my work printed - even though I don't have a printer myself.

(Oh, and I'm also going to lose a load of weight in 2011).

What about the rest of you....??

easier said than done, but: frame some work for a show, curate and reshoot prints behind glass for publication, and get rid of/offload some of the overflowing shelf of unused cameras and gear!

Mine is to:

1. FINALLY finish the Blurb books I've been working on.

2. Master those scary scanning and Photoshop beasts.

3. FNALLY get my on-line store up and running.

4. Be more organized.

5. Get one of those monster printers (to print poster size).

6. FINALLY lose the same ten pounds I've been resolving to lose since I was 12 years old.

Yup, print more and so get better at printing. Then, do something with the prints. Otherwise those growing folders of negatives mean nothing and I might as well shoot digicrap if all I do is scan them and stick them online. (I've been needing some serious darkroom time for a while and feel bad about it. Will be better when I have a darkroom of my very own I guess)

Possibly also choose one film and developer combination for each format and stick to it for the year. I'm all over the place at the mo and a bit of consistency would be nice. Need to also stop randomly pushing film and then forgetting to mark what speed it was shot at on the roll / canister (always seems like a good idea at the time, never have a permanent marker in my pocket / bag).

That and my usual, annually recurring list of: get healthy, stop smoking, drink only in moderation, be a better friend and stop being a verbose, pedantic arse

I don't do resolutions anymore... I just take what comes around and try to make the best of it.

Mine is to;

1) try and be much more efficient with my time.
2) take more photos.
3) start running again when this snow and ice have finally gone.
4) play more guitar.

In reality, I'd be happy with one of those!

I dont do resolutions either but my short term goals are:

To do more prints. I just got some new paper that I love, inkjet paper, and I want to start putting prints up on the wall by my computer.

Start making contact prints, which means I need to somehow create a darkroom and I really have no idea how to do that, or where, since I have no light tight spaces anywhere in or around my house.

Enter more competitions.

And yeah, lose a ton of weight.

photography wise - move away from aperture control and use 'manual' more often. Convert the shed to a dark room (now that I have an enlarger).

non-photography wise - get a greenhouse and stop getting hung up about the fact that I'm 50 in 2011  :-\

Mine is to get the darkroom set up (which will be pretty easy actually) and then learn to use it (which will not).

Drums? I used to play drums. Don't have any just now but I wouldn't need asking twice.... ;)

You really should hear me play guitar before wanting to form a band  ;D

Anyway I've thought of another one!

I must finish more work. I take lots of photos, but produce very few finished pieces of work. All part of being better organised and making the most of my limited time.

Well, anyone playing more than two chords is just showing off... (think I'm misquoting Woody Guthrie there). I can't really play more than a dozen or so folk songs (I'm cloth eared, ham-fisted & got no rhythm , just enjoy making noise). That's what the horn section's for- drowning me out (They'll have to be quiet during your 20min electric uke solos though  ;D).

Cowbell- **** yeah! I think we also need someone playing empty chemical bottles jug-band stylie and a xylophone made out of broken camera parts.

And a theremin

I don't do resolutions either as I know that I won't stick to the anyway ;) But if I were then my photography related ones would be as follows:

1. Get rid of most of my gear. Maybe even go down to just one camera per format (Nigel, weren't you looking for a Olympus Mju/Stylus?). I'm quite sure I won't be able to do that ;)
2. Shoot less (!) and actually develop and scan the rolls I've shot
3. Do my photo project and turn it into a book

1) already started the losing weight resolution 2 months ago and kept the weight off over christmas  :)
2) Have decided I need to get off my bottom and finally get working on the tri-colour printing... I have all the things to do it now. I have decent 4x5 cameras. I have RGB filters (okay not proper ones but enough colour lighting gel with the right spectrum emission for it to work). I will attempt to actually make a picture. IF THERE'S ANY SUNLIGHT EVER AGAIN IN THE UK! Holymoly it has been DARK since I came back from the US!  :o
3) oh yeah. book. I need to finish that PX100 First Flush still life book. Still not thought up a good introduction or title.
4) trying to get back to making more pictures. I've kind of stopped photoing as much in the last few months and haven't been happy with what little I have bothered making.
