90mm M/LTM recommendations?
« on: December 18, 2010, 03:22:07 PM »
Tally ho all, and a Merry Christmas to all

Anyone any opinions on a nice M mount (or LTM) 90mm lens?

Like the look of the collapsible Elmar (small for travel).

Don't want to break the bank.

Thanks,

Chops

Hi Chops.

I presume it's for travel / portrait work? I had an M6 a few years ago and borrowed a friend's 90mm Elmar but was never quite taken with it. I eventually went for a 75mm Voigtlander, the latest version of which seems to be this one:

You can probably still get the old version but the extra few stops and compact size makes up (IMO) for 15mm off the focal length.

I would forget the Elmar Mat. I had one for a while. It was Ok but nothing to rant about. It's also quite heavy and the amount it collapses really doesn't help a lot in space saving. If I remember correctly, you can't fully collapse it with the rear cap on anyway. The f4 aperture isn't anything to boast about either.

I changed it for an Tele-Elmarit-M. Not collapsible but not much bigger and a lot lighter (at least it feels a lot lighter). It also has a 2.8 aperture. And it's good.

There's various versions of the Elmarit and I'm no expert on them all but the one I have is this one...

Hop over to Ken Rockwell for a review.

If you absolutely want a collapsible lens, why not go for a screw mount 5cm Elmar and a simple Voigtlander adapter?

Though I've never tried my grandpa's camera, all his pictures were tack sharp. Lens opens to a modest f/3.5 but it collapses completely inside the camera.

The Cosina/Voigtlander LTM 90/3.5 (90/3.5 APO Lanthar, details at Cameraquest, apparently discontinued, but still in stock) is certainly sharp & contrasty (I have one) and relatively inexpensive.  Not particularly compact with the (screw-on) hood.
