OT: christmas music
« on: December 14, 2010, 04:40:33 PM »
A few people around here know that I make my own musical instruments (Mainly cigar box guitars).

Well, I just got an e-mail from another forum I go to saying that they released a collaborative Christmas album.

It's all amateur musicians who play on sub-standard instruments. (and no, I don't play on it :) )

Sound is really crunchy and slightly punk-ish blues tone. But hey! what do you get for free these days?

So, here's the link

Enjoy

My Christmas music preference is the old and traditional stuff (ie Bing Crosby rather than Mariah Carey) but I'm actually very impressed that this album includes home made instruments! The clips are a hoot!

Some of those hand made instruments are really surprising. Up to now, I've built two guitars and an amp and was quite impressed by their sound, especially since I had no idea what I was doing when I built them (well, almost no idea).

I've started to come to the conclusion that just about anything with strings can be "playable" to some degree.

About 10 years ago, there was a band called "The Presidents of the United States of America" who almost won a grammy using only instruments that were highly modified. They had a 2 string bass and a 3 string guitar. And out of that came some pretty contagious riffs. And their videos were ever so funny (like Mach 5 and Volcano).

Anyways, glad to see you enjoyed.

I for one can't have Christmas without Bing Crosby... it just wouldn't be the same :)

We do have a weird ritual in my family. On the 24th we decorate the Christmas tree and we have to listen to The Beatles while doing that. Oh, and for lunch we have to have spaghetti with tomato sauce :) However recently my wife introduced me to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and that's what we listen to right now.

I'm just listenning now and it's quite impressive Francois !

Christmas albums are not a big thing back home but since I've been living in London for quite sometime now I realized that is a very big thing here.

I'm gonna be honest and say that from a sea of Christmas albums available, a few ones really stand out for my musical taste ( and yes!  I also think that Mariah Carey is really bad!)

Anyway... my selection is "Phil Spector's" Christmas album and my favourite of all, although not the happiest, a US band called "Low"

Phil Spector's Christmas album has been a Christmas Day tradition in my household since I was very young but the day always starts with "Merry Xmas Everybody!" by Slade

I think I must be on a roll to update my old library!
I just discovered this page on the ReadyMade Blog

They have a bunch of free indie rock Christmas albums...
As always, free is totally my price :)
