Ours tend to be wooden or just piles of rock.

There's loads of them strategically placed down the UK's east coast. The ones at Clacton-on-Sea (Essex) are more angular but they are designed to take the force out of waves before hitting exposed cliffs, sandbanks, etc.

At least you have something to look at... Up in the gulf, there's a city who actually made their entire beach out of giant concrete slabs to prevent erosion... real geniuses.
