Back from Holidays with a bit of work...
« on: October 05, 2010, 09:21:04 PM »
I'm back from Brazil and the developing/scanning session has started! The weather over there wasn't that great so I have very little colour pics to show.

The picture 1 is part of my very first roll taken with my Holga without any mask. I like the effect with all the film edge showing but it's a pain to scan. I had to hold the negatives on scanner with selotape but the main problem is those annoying Newton rings !! Took me ages to do just this one... I might consider getting one of those lomographic film holder unless someone have a better idea  ;)

The second was taken with my Rolleiflex Automat TLR... and both shots at the same place in Sao Paulo.

Go to a glass shop and get a sheet of anti-reflection glass like is used in frames (the size of your scanner's top). Make sure the edges are properly sanded (you do need those fingers to press the shutter button).
Get some small silicon or clear rubber stick-on bumpers (the smallest will do) and put one on each of the four corners of the glass.

You can use an acetate marker or some paint to mark the scan area. Just need to add some clear tape to hold the negative flat and you should be in business.

I have a piece of glass at home from an old broken "all in one" printer/scanner that I thought it would be helpful one day... is this an anti-reflection glass by any chance ?

quite a different feel in the shots. I don't know if I like one over the other though

fun coincidence btw. I'm planning to take the same combo to some island sightseeing this weekend. though a yashica 635 instead of the rollei ;) (ohyeah, a tripod would be nice too)

the holga shot is superb - and you get the little double exposure in the bottom rH corner - only the best holgas do that ;)

I really like both shots.

Being of the "old school" where it was thumped (almost physically) into me that photos had to be pin sharp, exposed so there is no burn / black out and, ideally, no converging verticals, the Rollei shot had an instant appeal. However, as I'm finding ways to "love the blur", the top shot is really growing on me.

Like Jojonas, though, I'm not sure I'd want to hoose one over the other - they are both really good.

I like the combo as well, I regreted not taking my tripod...

Thanks for your feedback and I share same thoughts, although I consider the Holga shot a "rawer" snapshot since there's almost zero control over the picture. If I were you I'd give a go with an Holga and see what happens. I find myself sometimes choosing one toy camera over a "proper" camera depending on the subject...

Thanks leon ! I've always wondered what it was and you picture shows the effect even better.

The shots are a nice Yin - Yang and my Holga exhibits no such traits.  ::)

Your thread also reminds me it's high time I got the rest of my Cape Verde holiday shots scanned.

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised with that... ???
Mine is fitted with a glass lens, I like the pin sharp centered sometimes. If I want a more softer picture I normally go with the Dianas and their clones...

Here's a great source to compare plastic against glass:

And here is Holga against Diana ( the lomography one though...)

Sapata - I'll be interested to know how you get on if you do this. I tried a little while ago, I tried about three different types of glass (except the very expensive proper anti-newton glass) and I couldn't get rid of 'the rings'. It's something I'd like to get to grips with sometime.
